Took a drive to see the new Cayenne. Great opportunity to take the top off the 50 and enjoy some insanely fine weather. Thanks dbaker98 for all your help getting the top off and riding shotgun.

On the way back we had a nice gentleman's cat & mouse ride against a 996tt, was great fun up and over donner summit. F50 was the clear winner, she can slice and dice through traffic at speed like nothing I've ever driven before. The 40 is close but the 50 is a better road car in every way. The handling is similar but with less effort and less edgy at speed, the brakes are better, power is smoother and the sound is simply sublime.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the pics

Very cool of you to share the experience with others. If the weather up there is anything like we've been having in SoCal, it doesn't get any better! Thanks for sharing the story and pictures.

Edit: For some reason I get a real kick out of seeing the F50 parked in front of the Porsche dealership :)

You came through Nevada city, and you didn't call? Bah! I see you find the bag of necessary parts for the conversion, where was that hiding ? :)

    See you tomorrow.

+ 1 I bet the guys at Niello were surprised to see F50 outside their showroom!

Beautiful car, beautiful scenery. 'Nuff said.

Mike, sorry if this is a stupid question, but do you find the car louder or quieter with the top off?

Not quieter but different (and better IMO). With the top on you hear all the mechanical sounds but no exhaust sounds. You need earplugs with the top on and maybe you hear some exhaust. With the top off, earplugs not as necessary and then you can hear the V12 exhaust note. This is especially accentuated on 80 right now because there are so many retaining walls due to construction. there is wind noise and you still need to shout to have a conversation. Or just stfu and enjoy it (as we did). So I find it not quieter but better. Ironically I think the car looks best with the top on but its all around better experience with the top off.

Not sure; in the Italian section of the owners manual its called Capote, in the English section its called 'Emergency Top'. sounds like cavas. Top speed with Capote is 50 MPH. Needless to say we didn't use it ;)

I think I'd opt for the "STFU and enjoy it" option. :D ;)

Beautiful car and I love that drive up to Tahoe. Will you bring it down to Carmel Valley for the FCA concourse on Aug. 12th? I would love to see it

Well I'm planning on driving the F40, but if I can figure out a way to drive two cars at once then I most definitely will. Now that I think about it that would probably explode my brain with sensory overload, so probably not.

Last couple of times at concorso I never saw an F50 represented. Plenty of 288s & F40s but not a good showing from F50 or Enzo owners. So perhaps next year I'll bring it. bEsT ;)

So did the Porsche salesmen all turn quickly to their perspective buyers and mumble a load of whitewash about why THEIR cars are better than Ferraris --- LOL

Wow! Your pics on Old 40 over Donner Lake were taken just a couple turns from my home and property. Had I heard your F50, I'd of grabbed the CS and gone and played on the summit... We could even close the Caltran gate for a while and have the road all to our selves... until CHP caught on that is. :)

Anyhow, thanks for posting the great pics. If ever on the summit or Donner Lake again, PM me!

I agree with the STFU and enjoy it decision.

I would gladly come up to drive it down. I can keep it with me at the track for the week. :)

    Beautiful Pics!

One of my favorite Ferraris. I have only seen 2or 3 in my lifetime to date. For some reason I can't recall the 3rd siting. HMMMM!

I will be at Concorso this year. Are you going to the Monday Festivities at Laguna? If so, come early and wake all of us up that are sleeping in the Paddock next to the Concessions building. :)
