KERS is to return for 2011

Awesome news.


[And although Renault says it is delighted that its fight to get KERS back has been a success, team principal Eric Boullier has expressed some frustrations at the fact money now has to be spent optimising the older restricted systems rather than embracing more powerful technology.

"At Renault, we were a strong supporter with Ferrari," Boullier told AUTOSPORT. "We offered to raise the level of energy to 800KJ, to allow more work on KERS for the future, and to have a better show - because you can use twice more the KERS system during a lap.

"It would have been good for performance and good for F1's image, but the biggest concern was that Mercedes-Benz had a different technology and they could not do it [double the power with their system in the timeframe], and they did not want to invest their money on an 800KJ system]

Too bad Mercedes is going to be a drag on rthe advanced KERS developement.
They could use the PR spin to promote their street Hybrid offerings.
Perhaps Mercedes has chosen a Virgin stance where they really are in the sport more as a rolling billboard than trying to win the WDC/WCC.

Anyways, for some reason, i think it's just a bad idea...

 

So same power but more weight from the full gas tanks. Seems like it will be less effective that way. Assuming no refueling next year.

 

That's the reason every manufacturer is in the sport. Of course if your billboard wins its the best advertising.

 

KERS should be an 'all teams or no teams' option.

 

I like KERS. Now they just need to bring refueling back.

 

Kers is a great idea, if they would stop restricting it.

KERS stinks, why try to shove it up the team's bums when they all pretty much hate it, expect for McLaren? Hopefully they unite again and choose not to use it like they have this year.

Maybe, just maybe, something that Ferrari invested a lot of time and money im will pay a return. On the track and in the bank.

I disagree! The cool thing about KERS is it is a trade-off, more weight for more power. So it's got its ups and downs. I think this makes the racing more interesting, and ads another element of strategy.

 

It's not exactly more weight, as they will take out ballast, but the problem is that it is weight that cannot be moved around.

 

Of course MB/McLaren want to retain the original spec KERS. They'll likely mop the track with Ferrari and Renault using last year's systems. One of the main reasons McLaren gained so much performance over the course of last season was that they were able to make the system lighter and much more compact by the end of 09.

Was it MB or McLaren that developed KERS last year?

 

Maintaining the original KERS specs might not hurt Ferrari that much. Their biggest problem was that they were not allowed to go with the battery placement they initially proposed and had to cobble up a less than optimal setup. Given time they should be able to make real improvements while staying to the original specs.

 

+1 and +1 on Dave's comment re weight distribution - This time they should do better.

If Pat Fry really is going to Ferrari, he'll positively bring a load of good information to guide their development.

 

You are giving monkeys a bad name.

Please note this on-again off-again rule making does not reduce costs in F1. Just the opposite. So when they say they are doing something to save teams money one has to be VERY suspect.

I believe they are just giving lip service about costs and then do whatever they want any way. The monkeys are running the zoo.

 

It might be possible that KERS could be designed to save gasoline and thus ameliorate its weight penalty.

On the other hand, if one is NOT mandated to use KERS, just save the weight and laugh all the way to the finish line.....

 

Just when we thought it was safe to touch racecars again... don't look forward to wearing three pairs of gloves during the F1 sessions. Didn't the greenness of KERS take a hit when the battery/super capacitors were being tossed after every race?
