Wt. of oil

I would think so. However, my dealer told me they get mobil1 5-40 from the Mercedes dealer. It is not sold in stores. They don't like Shell because of the foaming issues.

PS: I've been using 0-40 in my 328 for many years. The manual called for 10-40.

 

I just bought 2 qts of Castrol syntech 5-40 at Autozone for my kids Audi. $7 a qt.

 

I would stick to mfg's recommedation

 

Depends on the purposes the car will be put through with this oil in the sump.

For less than race track use*: yes, 0W-40 is essentually interchangibel with 5W-40 and 10W-40. {Oil temperatures below 250dF}

For race track use you really want an oil with a high HTHS number. M1 0W-40 has a rather anemic 3.7 cP HTHS while Redline 10W-30 has 3.8 cP HTHS, and RedLine 10W-40 has 4.6 cP. M1 5W-40 TDT has 4.2 cP.

 

If going 250+ temps, one might want to get into an 50w synthetic from Redline or the like. Perhaps even 60w Shell helix racing a la Enzo or Jim's racing Dino engine. 40w synt with a high HTHS is perfect for anything else though. Great flow and protection from starting viscocity temps etc.

 

Dave, you got any info regarding the "foaming issues" with Shell? I'm interested in this.

 

I know it's been duscussed here sometime but basically when you check your oil and open the reservoir, you will see a lot of foam so theoretically, it is foaming inside the motor as well. I'm sure it does no harm except maybe reduce power a little. More of pain than anything else. When my 430 went out of warranty, I suggested to my dealer to switch to mobil 1 and they told me they had been using it all along. I know some 430s do use some oil but mine never used a drop. Perhaps the Shell oil burms off more also but that is speculation on my part.

What does the manufacturer spec call for? If its a 50 weight oil then that's what you should use beause a 40 will be too thin at the upper end of the engine's operating temperature range.

In practise Mobil1 has a very wide operating range but none the less if you had a problem & then were found to have the wrong weight/spec of oil in the car........
