    What do you do if you have two Ferrari 360 halves just sitting around?

    This is my latest project, you guys may find this as enjoyable as I do.

    The reason for this is to prove to myself once again that a Ferrari as special as it may be to all of us ...it is only a car, and that anyone with half the desire and some mechanical aptitude can think of it as your dads chevrolet. My kids do!

    All you need is a screw driver, ratchet set, levels, a lift and you get ... scrambled eggs as my son calls it.

    My Wht car was a front hit so I have all engine trans etc
    I'm only missing a few items. My engine has 5800 miles and
    ran perfect. I think I'm going to try a twin supercharge setup
    I feel I can figure it out with some effort.

    Curious on how you are joining the frames since it is all aluminum? TIG weld them?

    The Welding is done by a professional welder
    with many years of aluminium welding.
    The tricks apparently are proper prep within minutes of welding
    weld no more than a few inches at a time to keep heat low
    use special spool etc etc
    I can tell you we test welded the sill on a spare 3 foot section
    then stress tested under the wheels of a loaded with
    stone semi. The piece was placed on top of two bricks on one side.
    I can tell you this ... The only thing that did not give, was
    the weld. I'm certain that the welds on the car will not see that much stress.

    Welding aluminum is difficult, something I am still trying to master. You are right the key is the surface prep right before the weld to eliminate any oxidation. Can you please find out what shielding gas is your guy using? I am curious what shielding gas works best for aluminum application from an experience welder. Also what % tungsten is he using?

    welding is not a problem if qualified. i wonder at body straightness. i wouldn't attempt such a job without a jig to hold everything square and plumb. a twisted frame will be a nightmare to drive.

    That was exactly my concern. Turns out that as long as you are level at all three axis
    X,Y,Z then you have a chance of being dead on as long as you have the "official" measurments, and I do have those ofcourse. This car is straight and true based on wheel base and cross measuments at various points along X,Y,Z axis. Perhaps we got lucky:) as the halves had no deviation from true.

    Truly, that is where the fun comes in, the challenge of being able to do it!
    Please, do not get me wrong, it requires a LOT of work!

    If the guy is doing it right then he's using 100% argon and back purging as well. If he's doing a so-so job then he'll be using the regular 75% argon/25% CO2 and not back purging.

    If he's MIG welding then I suspect he's using a spool gun rather than spooling from the box, although, if you're careful (smooth/easy bends in the cable) then it can be spooled from the box.
