A Geneva man faces a felony charge of damaging property, after police said he put a 2-foot-long scratch on a Lamborghini Gallardo at midnight Saturday.

The man, who is black, was upset because he thought the vehicle's owner had used a racial slur directed at him, according to a police report.

Edward J. McGonagle, 24, of the 1100 block of Cheever Avenue, was leaving a bar on the 200 block of West State Street when the incident occurred. He walked over to the car, parked on the first block of North Second Street, and scratched the rear passenger-side door and quarter panel with a house key, according to a witness. The scratch went down to the bare metal.

The unidentified owner of the vehicle was not charged.

The police report said damage to the Lamborghini was estimated at $4,000.

The police report did not specify the exact type of Gallardo it was (Spyder or LP), but a check on motortrend.com shows the cars sold new for $180,000 to $206,000. Autotrader.com lists three used 2007 Gallardos in the Chicago area, from $128,000 to $144,000.

McGonagle was also charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property. His next court date is Wednesday for the misdemeanor charge and July 9 on the felony charge.

Luckily I've never had to investigate the costs of bodywork, but we can only imagine that to have it done right..... yikes.

Actually the local papers are reporting that the racial slur was from the suspect directed at the Lambo owner.

A tweny four year old, perhaps with a chip on his shoulder, at midnight(what might you have been be doing when out at midnight?) confronted with the object of his envy. That's how I see it.
So not only does the Lambo owner have to deal with repairs but also be accused of racism.
Worst I've had for just driving my Ferrari was the finger. (Ithink that's what it was for)
I hope the offender has the opportunity to scratch his name on a prison wall.

Ah yes, the envy tax... That's the reason I seldom take my car anywhere where I have to park it out of sight.

so what's gonna happen to the guy?
    certainly not a felony
he will be, what, ordered to pay the bill?
then the Lambo owner has to collect... whole different story
then there is diminished value. Can you collect on that?

Diminished value for a repaint of a mass-produced Audighini? If anything, so long as it is done right, I'd say the story could only add value to the car...
