    And so it starts.....

In less than 2 days, the engine is out!

Disc was wore down to the rivets! Flywheel sent out for resurface.

While the engine is out, various seals, bearing, o-rings, motor mounts, etc being replaced. Starter also being removed and checked.

If all goes according to plan, it should be back together and ready for next weekend!

    Nice post.
Are you going with a new factory clutch disc, ie. Sachs?
And what about the throwout bearing?
PS! I like your licence plate! Perfect!

Yep. Sticking with factory clutch parts (Sachs). Well, I should say reconditioned. The SACHS clutch disc is refaced, etc...

    Dear Lamborghinisti,

    Wow..... great pix!

I love the one with the CT on the lift....like it's flying through the air...

I didn't know you have a 512 TR as well, you should join us in the TR section as well.

I will say, I'm very jealous of your garage space... !!

...for the starter...just have it rebuilt and tested for peace of mind.

I wish I had all those cars! hahahahaha....

I have Jareme Parsons at Park Place Aston Martin doing the clutch job for me. Those cars happen to be in the shop at the same time as my Countach.

$10k + to replace the clutch is why I almost never drive my Countach :(

Plus the AC sux, electrical gremlins are abundant etc

I wish I could drop a Gallardo or Murc engine, computer, AC etc in there

Sounds like your Countach just needs a little TLC. The clutch should last many years and the car should be a lot more reliable than what you describe.

Thanks Joe. Not only did he paint the valve covers red, he also painted the intake manifold. I want to put it back to OEM, maybe sometime over the winter this year. I would have it all done while the engine is out right now, but I 'm trying to get the car back ASAP for a couple shows coming up (July 11th and July 17th). If it wasn't for those, I'd have it done right now for sure! :)

I understand the Summer driving season and all (it's even shorter here) but there's no time like now to get it right. It will be a lot more difficult with the engine back in the car. It will only take a couple of days to strip and repaint the cam covers and get them back on. I suppose you could wait on the manifold, it goes on and off pretty easily.

I wouldn't re-paint the intake, I would switch it for a row of Weber carbs. I checked on a former owner that was going to turn his QV injected into a DD - here is the list that an authorized Lamborghini service center came up with. At the time there were two things NLA from Lamborghini, one was the DD engine cover and the other one was the central airbox. We were able to find both used. The owner opted to sell the injected CT and did not go ahead with the switch.

These are the Euro prices inclusive of labor - sorry it's all in Italian.

    Very nice car though.

    Regards.

    Alex

How are your oil lines (hoses)? Typically they're in sad shape and are a LOT easier to do with the engine out.

This is also an excellent time to do a careful inspection of all the frame tubes for the not-so-rare RUST problem.

The braided stainless lines are in good shape. All the cloth wrapped oil hoses and all fuel lines are being replaced.

Give the braided hoses an especially good look, particularly near the ends, the rubber liner rots and becomes soft even though the braid kooks good.

I have the old clutch and flywheel from my euro spec DD QV. does anyone know where in the UK you can get these refurbished? Want to have them as spares. Over here a clutch kit costs £4500 plus taxes!!

For the poster who says he doesnt want to wear out his clutch; How hard do you drive? I would have thought that with normal use these should last 20000 miles. If only moving about slowly in garages then would be much shorter!

Mine was still OK when we resurfaced the friction disc. Normal driving they last 50t Km plus, I had mine redone at 43t km with a lot of track use.

I think 40,000 km if not abused with burn out starts.

Well, I got the bad news today that the Countach won't be ready before the Italian Gathering car show this Saturday. What a bummer!!!

The distributor is being worked on at a Marelli shop, but the guy doing the work had a death in the family and it looks like he won't be able to get to it until Monday.

They are putting everything back together and the engine should be back in the car Tomorrow or Friday Morning. Exhaust manifolds were cleaned up and reinstalled with new copper gaskets.

While we are waiting for the distributor, they decided to test the fuel injectors. WOW!! Good thing they did!!!! Take at look at these "Before & After" numbers!!! Like they said "Mike, I'm surprised your car ran with the injectors this bad and your distributor advance rusted and seized!"

I've also decided to repaint the valve covers back to OEM "Black Crinkle"! They were painted today, and in the oven curing tonight. I'll have photo's of those tomorrow.
