The words that strike fear into every father's soul when you're at a car show... I'm getting my camera ready for some pics of the 1988 winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Havoline Porsche 962 GTP driven by Hans Stuck and Klaus Ludwig. My 10 year old and I were at the Porsche Parade at Pheasant Run for a guy's day. My son was taking some pics and I was putting my stuff down when a nice lady in an event shirt came up to me and says those words...."Do you know your son is sitting in that Porsche?". I got that washed over Oh %^*& feeling and shot to the car! Sure enough, there he is proudly at the wheel of a priceless car that just happened to not be mine!!!! Now, he knows that is a complete no-no in the guy world. I couldn't believe he would do this!! I tell him he can't do that and get out of the car (as I try to figure out how he made his way in!). He calmly says, "He told me I could" and points to an older gentleman smiling broadly at me. Next to him is the lady who broke the news and she's laughing. Apparently this gentleman car owner (that's him in the blue shirt with khakis) loves to play this prank on us poor dads out there!! He had told my son, "Nathaniel, do you want to make your dad jealous?" and helped him in while I was getting stuff ready. The lady said my face completely washed out which made it even better for them. Not what I expected, but man what a memory!!

About 3+ years ago our dealership hosted a Lamborghini Ride 'n Drive at a golf club in Hawaii. Lamborghini shipped over 3 Gallardos and sent staff to run the event. First class affair. One of the invited guests brought his son; I'm guessing about 12 years old. The kid was absolutely blown away by the Lambos and other cars on hand (some of guests showed up in Ferraris, a Ford GT, etc.). The dad said the kid was a real car nut - read Road & Track, watched races on TV. Nice, polite young man.

I offered to let the kid sit behind the wheel of a Superleggera during the lunch break and got in the passenger seat to explain the controls to him. I asked him if he'd driven a car yet and he said no - but couldn't wait.

Not sure what came over me but I had him adjust the seat (he barely was able to reach the pedals), start the car, select 1st, and off we went.

He drove the car around the very large and sparsely populated club parking lot very slowly for about 5 minutes at not much more than 15 MPH. I've never seen a bigger smile on anyone's face. Gotta admit, I was ready to grab the wheel and yank the parking brake if necessary but he did great.

I got a very nice thank you note from both the father and the kid. Imagine - the first car you ever drove in your life was a Lamborghini!

Another awesome story! I've always said that kids are the future car lovers and without them, we'll all be driving Chevy Citations! The simple things are what will keep kids loving cars (instead of video game cars!) and wanting to be involved in them. Things like taking a minute to let a kid sit behind the wheel or taking a quick pic. It may seem meaningless to the car owner but to the kids, and their parents, it's special. When we were walking to the car, my son said he couldn't wait to tell his sister and mom how he almost made me have a heart attack. Then he said that's a story he'll tell his son. To me, that meant the world!
