    Empty CG = 20% MAC

    MOST FORWARD CG - With 170 # pilot, 15 gallons of fuel (AUW = 1203):

    CG = 20", or 24.5% MAC



    MOST REARWARD CG - With 170 pound pilot, 5 gallons of fuel (AUW = 1143):

    CG = 20.65”, or 25.7% MAC

    MY FAVORITE:

    With 285 pound pilot, 15 gal of fuel (AUW = 1318):

    CG = 21.58” or 27% MAC

    Really interesting to see these calculations and how close I guessed at the CG. I believe it was 20" from the firewall used as datum.Is that what you guys are using?

    Most aircraft like yours take a lot longer to build than yours did, some decades. Like your Mondial, once you decided what you wanted, you kept at it until completion. Congratulations.

    Yes, the firewall was the datum. And I had your drawing on the screen to help me collect my thoughts as I went through the drill. You were almost dead nuts on.

    What some may find interesting that in level flight attitude, of the Sopwith replica's 943 pounds, only 25 were on the tailwheel. You always read about the frontal mass concentration of the Camel design, and there it is. I imagine my CG is more forward than the original, even at my pilot weight, but I expect she will still retain some of her forbear's eagerness to change direction with low polar inertia.

    Still have many details, such as the shell casing exit chutes, side air intakes, and various final fittings. But to me, even now, to catch a glimpse of the cockpit environment, guns, Brunton flying wires and all of the original instrumentation is really amazing and adds to the 'another time' persona.

    Thanks Taz - it's my obsessive disorder. :)

    I think I'll go watch the 'Blue Max' again.

    Not many people even know what puttees are now. Those and leggings (that I wore) are long gone and good riddance.

    While not entirely true, am living the old adage currently. KUDOS to the EAA - their forms and certification kit for experimental builders is wonderful.

    Below illustrated is the forms packet, photo log and a POH I did in the style of the RAF 'Pilot's Notes' but have the FAA required info.

    Am FEDEXing the forms package to the DAR this evening. The airworthiness inspection starts THIS FRIDAY.

    For the first time in over 10 years, I flew a tailwheel aircraft again to see what my feet remembered. I scheduled my BFR for this morning in a 100 hp Champ, which I expect will have similar performance numbers to the Camel.
    YEEHAA!
    I had forgotten how much fun these airplanes were, and the wonderfulness of this kind of flight. After about 15 minutes I was back at home - it all felt so comfortable. Even after 10+ years the landings on both grass and pavement were pretty darn good for an old fart.
    I never even used the brakes except to stop on the taxiway. Even with two pretty big guys on board, that little 100 hp Champ went upstairs like an elevator and was off the ground lickety split (much unlike a T-28A).

    As we wafted happily above the green Texas farmland around Castroville at 1000 feet, window open and 80 miles per hour, I knew I had made the right decision to get back into this pure kind of flying.

    I have many memories of many many hours in a 7AC Champ when I was 10 to 12 years old, getting the crap wrung out of me doing aerobatics, coming back with branches in the tail wheel after a little session of tree-topping on one occasion, too young to know just how dangerous THAT was......................................... Charlie could make that plane do amazing things...............................

    Yeah, and with one aileron. Not really the spookiest thing. Just slowed down the roll rate and moved the center of rotation out to the good wing a bit. The square loops, snap rolls, hammerheads,etc. took a lot of talent. A fun show to do in 1967 and a few guys are copying it now but we were the first 43 years ago.

    I should expand on what Spasso is saying. He used to ride along with my partner, Chuck, when Chuck was exercising his obsessions with the Champ and practicing for the air shows. Dana might have more time in a Champ when it was upside down or in some kind of contortion than anybody I know including me. He is the only person that I know who has ridden through a snap roll while facing backward in the L-3. He mentioned how much the tail twisted during the maneuver. Also how weird it was to do a loop while facing aft. I did my share with Fred Ludtke in his 165 Monocoupe and friend Gene P. in his Ryan PT-22 and a few others. Three of my four boys have had a few hairy rides when we were flying. My youngest didn't care for it and that is okay.
