The headliner on the drivers side of my top is drooping. Does anyone know of a process to rebond it without completely removing it? If I do have to remove the whole headliner, how do I do it and what do I use to rebond it? Thanks
Mine did this too a few years ago. I took the top to a good automotive upholstery shop and they fixed it. I don't know what they did but it worked. I am mentioning this because your headliner - 80-82 - is no longer available anywhere. If you want to keep it original make SURE you discuss this with the shop up front. I know this because my 84 has the same headliner yours has. My car is the only one in the world like that too.
I've got mine out now and I'm recovering it. '84GTB. Mine was held in by the 4 visor screws and the A pillar covers at the front. At the rear, it was held by some tabs at the back corners and the center light cover. It was actually pretty easy to remove. I've got the new material, but waiting for the spray glue to arrive so I can upholster it.
What often happens is the headliner is glued onto a foam layer and the foam starts to disintegrate. IMHO, best to reinvent both sides...yes an auto upholstery shop has seen many such jobs as fixed top cars are also made with the same sandwich of foam, but in a removable top it's easier to work on, especially when the driver's side shows sign of hair grease and the passenger side is pristine.
I went thru this exercise. I think re-Originals has the correct original material. Very cool. I had a shop called Bascom Upholstery in Santa Clara CA do the work. It came out very nice. Supposedly, the backing foam was in a bad way, and it took some doing to sort out.
That's where I got my material from 10 years ago. I am pretty sure he cannot find anymore. I hope I am wrong.
Thanks for all of the input gentlemen. The fabric itself is in very good shape so I think that I will take it to a local auto upholstrey shop and let them do it. Better in the hands of a professional. David
