360 engine out service

Correct me if I'm wrong here guys but they were F.O.S. Full of $%^%. Advantage of the 360 is that service can be done with engine in the car. Perhaps for valve replacement, etc. it might need to have engine removed or major overhaul. I think they were thinking of 355 or 348's...

When I get mine I now know where NOT to take it.

My car is a 99 and I did my belts from behind the seats and underneath.
Any good shop can do it for around $1,600+.

No valve adjustment needed with the 360, hydraulic lifters takes care of that. The engine can even stay in for a top end rebuild.

 

I'm a customer of FOH, so it's just their policy on the belt change. They're not ripping anyone off because they tell you straight up what they will do prior to the work. It takes 1 Month in the shop. As it's been told to me, they do not like to simply cut-off the existing belts and slide new ones on, as most shops do. They perform a full dis-assembly of the top end, replace seals, and re-time the entire valve train while putting on the new belts. They will replace anything else that looks suspect as well. It's a pretty extensive service.

15k for a belt change is insane and absurd.

Blue- That is the kind of service that might be justifiable at 30,000 miles for a car with leaking valve cover gaskets, but is unreasonable for a car getting a 3 year belt change with, say, 12,000-20,000 miles on it. You do not need to degree the cams at every belt change and gaskets do not need to be replaced at every belt change. If you read the WSM for the 360 it will tell you to lock the crank, clamp the two pulleys together and swap the belts. Only when you get into deeper required maintenance would you need to do more.

Off topic, do you think if you saved $20 on your service you can subscribe to F-chat? The savings on your more "educated" next service will more than pay 500 times the return on the $20...

I know of a couple old school mechanics that are bitter that they don't get the gravy 40hr belt services with the 360 and still recommend pulling the motor. Fact of the matter is it's not necessary.

I personally advise to pay some extra time and I pull the valve covers and cams out when able to. I've found the front camshaft support bearings to be worn through more than once, so it's a personal preference of mine.

I do agree with Taz that it's a good idea at some point in the car's life to get the motor out for a reseal and proper cam timing adjustment. I feel that level of detail still has value and will help avoid other issues in the long term.

Wow, I think we are short changing ourselves. I can replace the timing belts, remove the cam covers, replace cam seals, service the water pump if needed and check/set the cam timing without pulling the engine. Very similar to an F40 but with a lot less parts to remove. We also charge far less than the above mentioned price. I was under the impression that everything was less expensive in TX vs CA......guess not!

 

That's like going in for a laproscopic appendectomy..which leaves a tiny hole to remove your appendix but your surgeon's policy is while we are removing that little appendix lets open you up all the way and poke around your liver, spleen, gall bladder, pancreas and whatever else is in there just in case....even though you haven't had any symptoms???? Forget the day recovery and a bandaid lets go for the full month and major scars!

Oh- I forgot about the free Prostate exam after.....without lube, it's more natural

 

yep, I was told my 360 has a very minor leak, pretty normal.. but my mechanic said he wanted to remove the top the next time it has belts done and reseal the gaskets headers etc. the whole job is not engine out and is about 2k more than a normal engine service..

I'm very much in the 'if it aint broke, don't fix it' camp, I'd go mad if everytime my car was in for a service they messed around with all this other stuff that they didn't need to, when people start poking around in areas they don't need to that can be the cause of problems.....
