    Hey Bluemax,

I too would really like to know the part number, source, or whatever you can share about the new blower motor and squirrel cages. Huntsville, AL summers are not unlike Houston, very hot and humid. I'd sure like to enjoy the 308 in the summer too!

    Woody,

I am at work for the next few days, but will check when I get home. If you "gotta have it now" call Steve Carr at Carr Auto Parts in Houston. Google his name and it will come up. He can get you the squirrel cages and blower motor. He's the one that ordered it for me. But I will check the P/N when I get home!

    Cheers,

    Max,

There of many of us that will learn from your experience.
I am hoping to do all of this late in the year to my car.

Any chance you can post all f the parts numbers that you used for this upgrade?
(Compressor, condensor, evaporator, blower, fans and relay)

I'd like to order all of the parts you have used...

Also did you come in under $1,000 in parts as you hoped?

Thanks again for this great thread,
    Brian

PS When I showed my GF this thread she said a heart felt "thank you" as well as she won't cook next summer when we go for rides

Beautiful work installing the Sanden. But I'm curious about the method used to insure belt/pulley alignment.

    Paul,
Thanks for the compliment. As far as alignment, I had the compressor on/off several times measuring distance and clearances. I used a straight edge to alignment of the three pulleys (I kept the tensioner in place) and noted the position on the adapter bracket. Then after pulling the compressor yet again to put the belt on, I matched the spacing I had previously established on the bracket mounting holes, and tightened. After running and reinspect, no movement. Voila!

    Thanks Woody!

Here is what I got through Steve Carr:

Sanden-type compressor (manufacturer is NEW Compressors) p/n CO4627C
    UAC Receiver/Dryer p/n RD-0954C
(same dryer as for a BMW I believe, just had to cut the mounting ears off.
    UAC 12 inch fan p/n CF0012MPS
    UAC 10 inch fan p/n CF0010MPS
Both of these fans were designed to be "pullers" not "pushers", therefore you must
take of the fan blades, turn them around (they are S-blades) and reverse the polarity
when hooking up the electric leads. This will "blow" instead of "suck" :)
    York/Sanden adapter plate p/n UAC 45002400F
    2 Shaft/3 Speed Blower Motor p/n UAC BM4320
    "Squirrel-cage" Blower wheels p/n OME 28-01505

    I don't have the Condenser p/n, but it was a universal mount 12 x 24 inch aluminum cross-flow condenser.

All the parts were around $800. Steve came by my place several times to help out and custom make the replacement hoses. That ran a bit more. If your hoses are in good shape and you can make the lengths of hose you have in the car work for you, you will just have to have new fittings put on the old hoses. The problem is if the old hose has become hard, it is a bit difficult to work with and get new fittings on. Possible, but difficult.

I also wound up getting a new aluminum radiator from Nick's Forza. Plus Nick, as you may recall, had the guys custom weld a mounting bracket on the radiator, which would be something to consider if just adding the condenser on to your OEM radiator.

I definitely busted my $1000 project goal. But in the end I got exactly what I wanted: A completely refurbished AC system that blows cold, and cools the cabin in the hot Houston summer months--even on R-134! Plus a new cooling system that keeps the engine running just as cool! All tolled: around $2500. That is brand new front to back plus the radiator and assistance from a professional A/C guy who really knows his stuff. A good investment in my book. Not exactly "on the cheap," as I set out to do, but you can pick what you want to do for your application.

    Hindsight and JMHO:
    -Fix any leaks,
-no need to switch compressors if it is working efficiently,
    -put on better fans
    -put in new blower motor
-re-wire relay to put both fans on with AC
-If your R-12 is not leaking and blows cold don't switch. This wasn't the case for me.

I still owe pictures of my continuing vent project. I have priced some new vent tube and aviation eyeball vents that will give it a nice professional look for about $150.

    Cheers!

Thanks Bluemax, this is a huge help. I was already planning to pick and choose a bit, so to speak. My car has a new radiator, and I believe the old york compressor is fine, if not as efficient as the newer sanden that I installed on my old 911. On that car I had replace the hoses with the newer barrier hoses, because as someone else here mentioned, they were known to leak through the hose itself. I've wondered if the same isn't true on the 308.

For the 308 I'm thinking I'll switch the blower motor and cages, see if additional vents can be added, replace or rewire the fans, and possibly have the hoses re-made with newer material. I have a small stash of R12, but I have also had good luck with the HC-12a from foxtoolsupply dot com. Yes, I know it is propane based, but it worked well in an old mercedes I had and I figure if I get hit hard enough in the 308 to leak freon in the passenger compartment, then I have bigger problems. I know there are a number of factors at work, but I think moving more air with the blower may be the biggest net gain overall, while the fans in front will make their contribution in traffic and while stopped.

Anyway, thanks again, and I'll post progress when I get into the project.

I had some spare aircraft SCAT tubing laying around. 3" and 2" This is my prototype for vent placement. The orange stands out nice so you can see what I did, but looks kinda crappy. I am going to order some 1.5" CEET and 3.25" CEET tubing (it is black and will blend better. And also a 1.75" ball-type vent to place underneath and to the left of the steering column. I can easily mold a fiberglass mount that can screw in under the dash, then cover it with some black vinyl to match the dash. The vent will be anodized black aluminum to blend in better. As it sits now, it cools off my left side nicely. I am also considering remolding another vent piece for under the radio and putting a different, more open rectangular vent there.

Another option you might consider is making a rigid duct using the fiberglass and the lost foam method. I ran across the link below some time back and thought it would be perfect for brake ducts or a/c ducts. You can model your part in foam and any shape or cross-section, so your duct doesn't necessarily need to be round, and can be fitted to whatever works best under the dash. Mounting tabs could be included on the fiberglass, and the whole thing could be painted black to disappear under the dash.

Still working on the driver side lower vent that I added in to increase airflow. It definitely makes a difference. I think I am about 90% there. I fabricated a vent housing out of fiberglass, covered and installed below the dash using existing screw holes.

Also, it is blowing fairly consistently at mid/low 40s.

Not to be an alarmist but anyone considering using a Sanden compressor please note:

    1) Sanden compressor pulleys are designed for a 40° V-belt
    2) Ferrari used a 60° V-belt
    3) using a 60° V-belt on the Sanden could cause a catastrophic failure of the V-belt
    4) simply using a 40° V-belt won't work since the crakshaft pulley is also designed for a 60° V-belt
    5) worst case scenario is the broken V-belt ends up damaging the camshaft timing belt(s)

YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY!

I am installing this kit currently:

    http://www.retroair.com/ferrariairconditioning.html

Everything has been well-made/designed for the 308, however I ran into a snag this weekend - you cannot install the long A/C Compressor lines with the fittings pre-attached. They will not run behind the fuel tank and make the 90-degree 'turn' to feed into the conduit that runs the length of the car to the front. In talking with the manufacturer, we're going to cut-off one pair of fitting ends, run the hose, and re-attach a new set of fittings to the hose once installed (they're going to mail me a new set).

Can you provide more information about the kit.

    What's included?

    Does it replace all componenets?

    Any photos?

    Thank you,

    Robert

Well, this is disturbing news! I'm about to install a Sanden in my 328. The problem is the V-shape/angle of the belt profile? What can be done to overcome this problem? Can my OEM York AC pulley be retrofitted to the Sanden?

Also, Sean, thanks for the SPAL link for new dash vents--my car has 2 broken ones.

    Greg

It appears that, with the Gates 11M875 v-belt, no one is having problems.
I have been concerned about this for a while and, now that I am ripping the car apart to re-install the AC, it's becoming a greater concern.

Let me know if you discover a procedure to swap out the pulley from the old York to the new Sanden as I have both.

    Cheers!

Don't sweat it. I've been running that set up for a few years and had zero problems. The belt is flexible enough, and there is enough contact that it works just fine.

Also, Steve Car's cell is 832-868-0564 PM also sent.

Just as an update from my modification... Still running quite cold. It's been in the 90s already this year and the cabin is still cool with my ac modification. Also I have had no issues with my sanden pulley.
