Soooooooo many variables with these type of posts/questions. Me, I would rather pay the extra $10-20k on a lower mileage car than incur the potential $10-20k issues that may happen with this car.

    Here is one:

http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=4611 No affiliation with seller and I have no real knowledge of the car, other than the ad. Just a quick example. of what I am talking about.

I would want to see the car and drive it after ppi before a purchase as well. Really don't know what to tell you, but do what you think will work for you.

I would say check it out & get a complete ppi... It has a few $$$$ options also- Capristo exhaust, daytona seats, painted calipers, challenge grills F&R - however on negatives.. Goo removal needed in interior, no tools, no covers, no tire inflator roll, manuals?, oem stereo missing, plain wheels..
    1. check the following particularly- exhaust manifolds.
    2. verify what was done at this service. Who did it? Ferrari dealer or johnny jackleg?
    3. Compression/leak down, oil pressure, etc...
    4. suspension wear items, ball joints etc..
    5. get on a lift & inspect under & all 4 corners..
    6. Service history, belt changes, tensioners replaced? water pump?
    7. Check for any leaks on hoses/fittings/valve covers etc..
    8. Road test this car & road test one with 15,000 + or - miles.. how do they compare..
    9. Paint all original, front respray for chips - OK, spolier damaged?
    10. Brakes/rotors... when will they need replacing- (more expensive than a "normal car" to do)
    11. Tires, worn? again $1000 + you will incur..
    12. Any gas smell while driving with a full tank, cornering or emissions lights?
    13. All 3 fobs? 1 red, 2 black... alarm siren battery OK?

In my opinion if it all checks out, could be a great buy for a driver... Surely you will not lose much in a couple years... in fact unless something unexpected occurs, you may make out better than someone who bought a low mileage 360 a year + ago..

With the savings it leaves you ahead of the curve on service... just make sure the manifolds, transmission & motor are looked at closely... remember you will have to decide around 60,000 miles do you want to replace the cam variators or roll the dice.. I like a complete service history back to its birth, however dont let it be a deal breaker on a passing PPI..

I would not run myself, however she would get my undivided attention with all the above - prior. I would myself prefer a 6-speed but as long as F1 checks out & passes with flying colors- your preference...Make sure whoever does the PPI is CLEAR on above issues & FAMILIAR with the 360!!

Let us know what you decide,
    Chris

I love when they list the F1 as E-gear, automanual, or automatic.

thanks you guys...especially Charmr3 for the detailed input. It is much appreciated. I think if the car were here in SoCal, I would seriously consider it and could be on top of all the inspection issues...but too far from me to deal with all the issues...I will keep pounding the pavement looking.

So many times people say they will take a high mile car over a low mile car and now a good priced high mile car comes up and people knock it. INCREDIBLE!

Why do Ferrarist think that modern Ferraris will not make 100k miles or more without having major issue or costing a lot to do so.? Many people act as if it should be junked. If these are only good for 50-75k think I think they are really POS and I should trade mine for a Porsche.

Porsche guys feel their cars are just getting broke in at 50k. With this down market , we will begin to see more cars with miles on them ... so scrap yards get ready!. Expensive metal will be coming your way.

PS why does no tools, no covers, no tire inflator roll, manuals?, oem stereo missing , make a difference? They dont make it run better. Service history should be the most important thing.

chrmer3 you have the right idea!

I've done 88,000 miles in mine now. Most reliable car I have ever owned. Had it 8 years.
No issues other than wear and tear!

    Another satisfied driver-
OP - do not run... yet. Have someone be your eyes & PPI, a local area Ferrari dealer can be that. Someone with no skin in the game...

$60k'ish for a '03 spider is a bargain if it checks out.... seriously. Do not be scared from distance. Let someone be your eyes, I would bet they will be more astute than you can be on inspection...

    Seriously.. dont run, yet.

Ferrari Gods state 60,000 miles I believe.... So, do you leave well enough alone? Or do you risk currently A-OK variators for a potential bad or mis-installed one....Ferrari never did (to my knowledge) ever make a 100% failproof variator... Rumor has it the taper to the threaded area should have been a larger diameter... Some say bad installs can also fatigue the variator weak point & cause a pre-mature failure...

So, what do vehicles approaching/at/beyond 60,000 miles do? I guess you flip a coin ;)

Knock it?? No, proceed with caution, yes. Why does no tools, cover. ect. mean anything? To me it indicates an incomplete car, with owners that either lost/sold/kept the items. If they couldn't keep those items together did they pay enough attention to maintenance??

Agreed, service history is the most important thing. I am willing to bet there is none with this car. Says oil was changed, how about all the other fluids?? Thats a easy $800 for a full fluid service, to include: coolant, F1 fluid, diff and so on. Did they just change belts or did they do tensioners, bearings, variators and so on. Have they EVER done a full 30k service, to include, plugs and so on? Thats another $2-3k.

Do I think 360/430 can go over 100k miles, sure and they well should. Do I want to start that journey with a car at 50k, with questionable past, NO.

My opinion only and I understand completely others views as well.

I agree with the majority on this -- 50K well cared for miles is just getting broken in for a 360. The most important element will be a thorough PPI by a disinterested but experienced expert who knows how and what to look for since service records may not be available. You should probably check the cosmetics for yourself to make sure you will be happy with (or don't mind fixing) whatever is there.

If the car is really "right" it can be a great deal since the high miles don't necessarily hurt anything except the price.

50k is not high mileage for anything.. the ferrari is built just as strong as any other car like a BMW etc etc.

Just drive them, we need more high mileage cars on this site

I would seriously consider it...................... I would be cautious but not retarded. Nothing is wrong with a 50K mile F360 if everything was kept up and even still. If I knew that this sell was going, i would have sold my Viper SRT-10 and P-Car 911 C2S for this and still have money to throw wheels on, take my wife out to dinner, etc.etc.etc. :).
Great Deal but just do the proper leg work.

    My $0.02

Please! Help me understand how missing tool bag or books translates to poor maintenance?

I bet most people can't find the books from their daily driver.

We shall see how this turns out as the car is in a reputable shop at this time getting a PPI.

Not poor maintenance... it's just a deduct off the pricing... Most likely someone at the original before auction selling dealer robbed them...
They just expensive as hell to replace if one so desires... Mine live in the car most of the time, I remove when I go to "away for the weekend" events for trunk space (wife ;) ).

Cant wait to hear the verdict. all sounds good except hearing these cars as built as well as any other car or BMW THis only a fool would believe . IF they were built as well any any other car they would be a hell of a lot cheaper to take care of so thats a little absurd. No italian car is built as well as a german or even Japanese car from my experience Japanese car but thats the price we pay to indulge our passion . As always only my life experience
