I notice that when the safety car came out, Lucas Di Grassi in the Virgin car passed the safety car after the safety car crossed the SC line. He passed the SC while it was coming onto the track and he was 5+ carlengths behind the SC when the SC crossed the SC line.

There was a lot of talk on here when the same thing happened with Hamilton. Those who were most vocal stressed that this was a major safety issue, it was not simply about Hamilton getting ahead of Alonso.

So you can imagine my shock that nobody has yet raised this very very important and very very serious issue. It is clearly something that needs dealt with immediately, is it not? Surely Di Grassi must be immediately banned, if not immediately killed.

I wanted to get the opinions from those who were most vocal about the prior race... I am curious why nobody spoke up thus far about this very disturbing and extremely dangerous issue.

Even Varsha did not mention it - although, laughably, he was talking about Hamilton passing the SC last week *AS* Di Grassi passed it this week.

I saw that too and actually rewound the TIVO to look at it again... The only thing I can think is that he was told by the FIA via radio that he needed to be ahead of the car so they could pick up the LEADERS... Thats what I got out of that deal...

    Mike,
did you happen to hear what Alonso told his team on the radio. He pretty much told them to shut up--but what were his exact words?

Lucas was given a green light on the rear of the safety car, you'll see it light up, that's why he was allowed to pass the SC

+1 if i remember right. Regardless, there is of course going to be more talk when a front runner does things like this than a backmarker because people notice especially when it affects Ferrari. I don't think we have anyone on here zoning in on Di Grassi and watching his live timing...:)

Mike is this thread in regards to those who were saying it makes no sense for drivers to be waved by the SC?

Lewis was never given a green light at Valencia, he deliberately passed on his own accord.

His point (from what I can tell) is to lash out at all the Hamilton "haters" that got pissed about Hamilton passing the SC for safety reasons yet did not make a thread about DiGrassi doing similar even though from what I can gather he was allowed to.

As if people are following a backmarker Virgin driver's race as closely as the WDC leader's...

They changed the procedure so that the safety car will only pick up the lead car. So any other car would be waved by until the leader arrived.

Not the same situation. Hamilton just violated the rules, DiGrassi was given instructions to go past the SC because they did not want a slower car at the front that could potentially cause a problem at the restart. You know, those new teams some people complain about. If they hadn't Luca di Monteloser would have complained.

Makes sense actually. Let the front runners race.

Hamilton violated the rules. Can't change reality.

    Exactly.

If it were in the name of safety, as was claimed, they would be.

    Ron,

I do not disagree at all that Hamilton violated the rules - he should have been penalized, and he was. I really did not see a green light on the SC when Di Grassi approached - he must have sharp eyes because the SC was still in the pit out lane when he went by.

I believe it illustrates the point - the issue is with the SC rules, not with the drivers. I think we agree that Luca ought to STFU and focus on the racing and the things within his control and forget about the things out of his control :)

Again, since nobody seems to be comprehending, the safety car has nothing to do with safety but is there to spice up, apparently (?), the TV show.

It came about in F1 because of Bernie and Max ... so they get the cars all grouped up again to make the racing interesting.

The double yellow flags are there for safety and do the job perfectly ... no need at all for the safety car.

That's twice in as many days you hit the nail on the head Pete!

It is unfathomable to me that they would even consider not waving cars by to pick up the leader. Every time the SC comes out and they don't pick up the leader, they screw several folks and hand a huge bonus to several.

It was not an issue before it caught Ferrari out, and the fact that it was Alonso and Hamilton poured salt into the wound.

I think that is what was so ridiculous about the Schumacher penalty for "passing the SC". The thought that a rulebook would overrule the flags being displayed on track is the height of idiocy.

NASCAR has invaded the sanctuary of F1 ?

you're perfectly correct of course, where were the "safety cars" when it really was dangerous ?

I disagree with Andreas plenty of times - we don't see eye to eye on Schumacher at all, or Kimi, or Alonso, or Webber, or... well, a lot of people actually! But I don't see him imposing anything on the group.

I do think he disagrees with plenty of what is posted, but it would be a crying shame if a guy like Andreas wasn't allowed to post his opinions just because he's a mod. There aren't too many more knowledgeable folks here than him. And I've found he can take it just as much as he dishes it out, if not more.

    My .02 anyway.

But, I agree, he has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to Schumacher, who is clearly the best driver of all time. :D

    LOL, thanks. I suppose. :)

Actually the worst thing that could happen to me and FChat is when everybody suddenly would agree with me (or with anybody else for that matter): The whole point of this forum is to discuss different opinions.

Sometimes I like to take the opposite stand of what the common sentiment is to generate a discussion. I guess the technical term is "agent provocateur".
