My 360F1 Spider developed the following problem - the "engine lid open" warning light is on, and I can't engage the 1st gear or reverse (R), because it slips into neutral (N). Also, can not open the top... Tried to clean the lid contact, but nothing happened... That push-button type contact inside the lid that gets pushed in when you close the lid may be at fault.., because earlier when I tried a couple of times to push down the closed lid a couple of times, - it temporarily fixed the problem; but towards the end of the day it completely refused to detect the closed position of the lid. I had to keep pulling on the "up-shift" paddle to start moving in the 1st gear, which then would slip into neutral, but because the car was moving already, I would up-shift again and it would select the 2nd or 3rd gear and then I could select any gear and drive until I had to stop on a red light. Then, Ihad to repeat the "procedure" again to keep moving...

If you had a similar problem, please describe the solution (other than the obvious - going to a F---i dealership to check it out).

Mine did the same thing, I fixed it by adjusting the cables that lead to a micro switch under the black cover where the hood latch is. That switch lets the car know if the latch is in the open or closed position. easy to do once you have it apart and see what I am talking about.

I would spray a little bit of W40 into the latch/switch location first to see if that would loosen things up (you might get lucky)?

If that does not work then disassemble the switch as suggested above.

    Good luck

Happened on my 360, you need to check the cable and the contacts near the latch mechanism. Also, if you get stuck some where, you can hold back on the "up" paddle and apply a small amount of pressure to the accelerator and it will jump into gear and go. Two problems, when you stop it goes out of gear again and two, don't know what it does to the clutch.

I had the same issue while driving and I made it to my local dealer. They service department told me that the switch most likely burned out due to the tubi ngt exhaust. They know that I did several track events in my 02 360 spider. Lots of heat is produced in the engine bay during track events and the switch usually melts (or so they say). They could not fit me into the service department. I limped home and a friend of a friend came by my house with a OEM part and $175 later it was replaced within 5 minutes. Good Luck

I am glad to let those who are interested know that I was able to resolve the lid sensor problem in 5 minutes !!!

First, one should unscrew 4 screws and 4 nuts of the "box" containing the sensor for a lock mechanism of the engine lid.

Next, one should identify the "sensor", shown in the picture by an arrow. Actually, the "sensor" is a simple push-button change-ower mini-switch, that is depresed by a flexible metal strip which is pushed on by the lock mechanism when the lid is closed.

This metal strip was weakened over time and lost it's "springiness" that us necessary to push onto the switch button and activate the switch.

All I had to do - is to slightly bend this metal strip inwards (about 2 mm) and this resolved my problem - no more "open engine lid" light !!!

Let me know, if anybody develops such a problem and needs more detailed instructions.

So if that's the micro switch that senses the position, then what the heck is that springy button thing on the engine deck lid used for?

Based on the Ferrari 360F1 Spider wiring diagrams, that push-button type contact on the engine lid is for the additional stop light in the middle of the lid. When the lid is closed, this push-button comes into contact with a plate-type contact positioned reciprocally on top of the housing for a latch mechanism (on the right side) and a 12V current is carried thorugh these contacts to the lamp, which is grounded and this completes the cirquit. In the picture of my previous post, you can see inside the box containing the latch mechnism (on the right side) a single red wire going to that contact plate.
    Cheers.

Yesterday I was on the dyno with my car. After two hard runs I decided to open the back lid to cool down the engine. When I decide to go for a third run the car does not want to engage gears, I said F**k the f1 system. Then after 10 minutes of suffering I remember that the back bonette was not full locked! What at relive!!!

I am still having this issue. How did you disconnect the sensor? Where is it located at?

    Thanks in advance

As mentioned before, all you need to do is to disconnect the micro switch to keep the signal open. I must be NOT be grounded to allow the F1 gearing and alarm system to work normally. It will avoid also a lid open warning on the control panel. When the lid is opened, the switch is closed (and signal grounded). As shown in Juri's picture, it is located inside the box at the center containing the lock mechanism. Once the box removed, you can see the micro switch from underneath.

I've had this issue twice with my 360 spider. I just opened and re-closed the cover, and problem subsided. I'm glad you posted such a nice write-up. I look forward to fixing it properly.
    Good post.

The " springy button thing " is the contact for the third brake light.

Similar issue on my 02 360. Just as described, removed the box and bent the arm a smidgen. Problem resolved. At the time I woulda done what Stefvan suggested if I had know that at the time.
