Greek Life

OK, so if you were a member of a Fraternity or Sorority in college, I'm sure you heard at least once that you paid for your friends. Let's see if we can connect with some of those "paid for" friends. What Fraternity or Sorority did you belong to in college?

Phi Kappa Psi from the Arizona Alpha Chapter and I learned that I could balloon slingwhot oranged from the roof of our house blindly over an apartment building right into Beta.

I'm surprised you've never heard that before. People who are opposed to Greek life often rant about members buying their friends (dues and other costs associated with being Greek).

You know what, I made a mistake. I hung out with guys in Pi Kapp, not Phi Psi. I read that a bit too quickly!

OK, I have to ask right now. Please bear in mind that I'm from Europe where we don't have the 'greek life' and fraternities and such.

What is it all about? You forever see it in (college) movies, often seeing drunk guys with the same jackets shouting 'Alfa Beta Zeta RULES!' (or similar)...


So therefore a straight forward question, what's it all about?

 

There are certainly chapters that are all about partying and nothing else, but that's not what its supposed to be about.

The idea is that its a group that forms out of common ideas and goals. And by being part of a large group you can accomplish more than as individuals. Usually those goals include academics, sports, community service, and partying.

It also gives you the opportunity to meet people that are older than you who can serve as mentors, or people that can expose you to different interests. And leadership roles arise as you have 30+ people that need to be organized into something productive.

 

I guess I've heard variations of that perspective. And there were houses where that probably applied.

I was a Greek, and I never heard that before either.

Anyway, Sigma Phi Epsilon at East Tennessee State University, 1979-1983.

 

Now if there was a female sorority named "Greek Life" that would definitely get my attention.........
