Greetings from Arizona. I'm hoping that one of you more experienced Ferrari Guys can tell me where I might find a set of Schematic Drawings of the motor mounts used in the 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS. At this point I'd even be happy with a picture of one of these motor mounts. I figured this would be a good place to start with my search for these parts. Thanks for your time and any help you may be inclined to share. Tim M. Upholsltryguy.
I'm not too sure how much detail you want but have you tried the parts drawings at the ricambi site ? There may also be more data in the 308 section here
Here is a picture. I have 2 good used ones for sale sent me a pm if interested. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you gentleman for the quick replies. I have a customer that's restoring one of these beasts. He happened to mention that he was having problems acquiring these parts. I've fabricated various parts before so I told him I try to find some schematics online and see if I might possibly be able to duplicate them. Somehow I seem to recall him describing these motor mounts as being in the shape of a "Dumb-Bell." That's why I put, "Not what I expected" in the title line above. I did a motor mount search on this forum and didn't come up with anything real specific regarding the motor mounts on this specific model and year. Of course, I'm not a Ferrari expert, owner, mechanic or Ferrari-anything for that matter. I'm an auto upholsterer and occasional small parts fabricator. It could very well be that when I did my search I pulled up exactly what I was looking for but, because I've never seen this type of motor mount before, I skipped right over it. Greyboxer mentioned a "ricambi site," I'll have to check that out. In the mean time, if you happen to come across any detailed schematic drawing of these motor mounts please let me know. Thanks again for your replies. Tim M. Upholstryguy
I am not aware of any shortage of them. T Rutlands has an ad for them on Ebay and Ricambi on here should be able to get them for you as well.
There's also a thread in the 308/328 Section where some individuals modified a Summit Racing solid engine mount to fit our cars. Transmitted some engine vibration thru the frame into the driver's seat, for an exciting "tingly" feeling..... There's a thread right now where they were installed incorrectly and the engine isn't level, so tag the fronts and the rears upon disassembly.... I'd buy Bert's two usable ones...that would get you halfway down the road! Nothing special about a 1978......1976 thru ?? were the same.
If/when you take one apart (carefully), you will find a spring inside. These rust, get weak from heat cycles, etc. resulting in drooping. Just like the road springs after 30+ years. I am looking into rebuilding a set as new is too many $$ for my budget this year. Personally I prefer repairing over replacing, seems more in line with the age of when the cars were designed and built Gerrit http://dino308gt4.com Have you hugged you car today?
If he described the mount as shaped like a dumbbell, he may have been talking about the "reaction rod", the bar that connects the rear valve cover to the body at the rear of the engine compartment.
I'd just finished re-doing his seats and carpet when the subject of motor mounts came up. I could have misunderstood him but, he seem to make it sound like these particular parts were difficult to find. When I inquired as to what they looked like and could he bring one over so I could see it he said his vehicle didn't have those components, that's why he was looking for those parts. I'm kind of thinking he's hoping to get lucky and be able to get over that hurdle on-the-cheap; if that's possible with a Ferrari. If I can't build it myself I generally lean heavily toward "Good Used" replacement parts but, that's just me; I'm chronically cheap that way. With the help of some of your relies I had no trouble googling and ebaying up some replacements motor mounts. He could have meant that an inexpensive set of these were hard to find. The cheapest ones I came across were something like $210.00 a piece; that's kind of steep to me. Oh Well, I'll be seeing him again in a couple of day to recover his steering wheel. I guess I'll get all my facts straight then. Thanks alot you guys. You've been alot of help to me. I really appreciate it. Tim M. Upholstryguy
IF you can do a good job of redoing the steering wheel, we could send you a lot of business, but Ferrari owners are sticklers for accuracy against the original workmanship..... Now that it's mentioned the engine reaction rod, tying the block backwards to the trunk bulkhead with rubber bushings at each end, does look like a dumbell....sort of. The wrecking yards dealing with Ferrari's are pretty easy to find, but TRulands (Georgia) FerrParts (California) GT Car Parts (Arizona) Eurospares (UK) Those will get you a long way in the 308 series of cars as there are LOTS of them that have burned/crashed.
Detailed Schematics of this "DumbBell" shaped Do-Hicky anyone? If not, that's OK. Just wondering. At first glance this appears to be something I can make myself. Image Unavailable, Please Login
i thought it was noted his was missing. The rubber inside is available, I've heard of adjusteable aftermarket setups, and I imagine about every wrecker has a few lying around. Wreckers listed above.
Like was mentioned above, if the rod is there the rubber can be replaced, it's just bushings. Look about halfway down this page for the "torque bar bush"... http://www.superformance.co.uk/a-308/eg.htm
Greetings Gentlemen: I'm sorry, I should have mentioned up front; the photo I provided is not the engine belonging to my customer. My costumer sent it to me to show me an example of the "DumbBell" shaped part he was looking for. I know from some informal research that it is possible to replace the bushings. What I was hoping for was maybe a lead as to where one might find some detailed schematic drawings of this part so that I could fabricate a copy. Someone mentioned an "Adjustable" style aftermarket part as a replacement. Having seen what this part looks like now, that's sounds like a pretty good idea. Any ideas where I could find drawings? Tim M. Upholstryguy
It's not meant to be adjustable, it's a Torque Rod to keep the engine located..... I'm looking for my keys, if I find them I can measure mine to give you an idea on dimensions, then you can order the rubber inserts and be good to go! Ferrari doesn't release detailed drawings, but we have many fine draftsmen here on the site, Ferraris tend to attract them......LOL!
Easier and cheaper to buy a used one. There is no shortage in the world of used torque struts. Its not like they wear out. Rutlands and GT car parts both probably have a box full of them.
I am interested in changing the Engine Mounts on my 1985 308 GTS QV. Who has the best price in these? There seems to be a number of people, T.Rutlands, etc., and prices are all over the map. Thanks guys!
When doing my car we found that there is a "new style" mount being sold but it just didn't look correct or substantial enough to use. Be cautious. It was correct as far as dimension I think. When all else fails read the damn manual. - wife
