Hi, have a 1981 308GTBI that will not restart after the engine has been run and is hot. Have tried various procedures according to the factory manual, but the engine simply spins without catching. Would appreciate any feedback - my only solution now is to wait till the motor cools... Thanks.

Eventually, all 308s seem to become afflicted with 'warm start syndrome'.

In my case the thermo-time switch, located in the valley just in from the oil filter, went bad and caused the cold start injector to flood the engine. It's function is to time out after a few seconds. To diagnose this, unplug the connector at the cold start injector, it does no good during the summer anyway.

There are other possibilities but try the likely and easiest one first. If the problem persists, revive this thread.

my 1981 GTBI suffered from that as well. I replaced the fuel pump with the newer design external check valve and have not had a warm/hot starting problem problem since.

    Matt & Dean,

I've had this problem with my Dino for years--starts immediately when cold or warm, but very difficult when heat soaked; starter works just fine but engine won't start, just keeps cranking. Could you both be more specific, like what brand and model fuel pump. My Dino has a 4 year old FACET "Silver Top" pump, 4.0 - 5.5psi. Dean, what's the story on the check valve you're talking about? What advantage does that have?

    Thanks, guys,

    Bill

    Hi Bill,

Hot starting is common problem on carbed v8's but the cars in question here are injected.

Ah-ha! Big difference in pressure. I'll check the 206/246 thread. Thanks!

had that issue. Let the car sit for 15-30 min & it started. - replaced a lot of components. no difference.

Was finally found to be an intermittent fueld pump problem.

The problem on my car was the failure to retain residual pressure in the fuel system following shutoff. After much troubleshooting and asking around, I determined that the likely culprit was a malfunctioning check valve on the fuel pump. Since the original fuel pump had an internal check valve I went ahead and replaced the pump with a later version which has a external check valve. I did have to modify my fuel lines. Larry Fletcher taught me how do it and like I said previously this took care of the problem in my particular situation...Sorry this won't help with the Dino
