A customer of ours came in to fix the acid rain etching marks that were on the hood and the trunk. Thankfully there were no marks on the roof because it is an all glass convertible. (Etching can occur on glass as well) They were rather deep etching marks, so the only way to remove them is to sand them. The following will show the sanding process as well as the compounding/polishing/waxing stages to restore this damaged paint.

Wheels and car were fully prepped for the sanding process (citrus wash, clay etc.) The car was then masked off to assist cleanup and protect the sensitive edges and whatnot. After several passes with a DA and 3000 grit Trizact, it looked better, however thats wasnt good enough for me. I then went to a heavier grade of 1500 on the DA and thats what started to cut through the acid rain marks. After the 1500 was done it was followed by the 3000 grit to make the paint as flat as possible. At this point the sanding, compounding, Polishing and glazing are done.

You can see the dimple effect that the paint has. These are the acid rain etching marks

Sorry for the delay with posting the final pictures. We left off with all the compounding/polishing compound completed, and all the acid rain damage removed. There is still a real good amount of clear left on the car. (between 120-130) The following pictures with show the rest of the restoration process, so without further a due here they are...

    Polishing all the small edges

What year and how many miles on that SL? Seems like an awful lot of acid rain damage for such a new car? Please provide me with your thoughts and if there is a way to prevent such damage. Thank you.

Prepare the surface with 2 step compound (Meguirs 105 and 205) then seal the paint using a synthetic sealant.

Or park in a garage. lol

2009 with 6k miles. Park indoors and keep a good coat of wax over your finish. Rain should bead and fall off your car.
