Thoughts on this Mondial Cab...???

Once again Ive found a car with interior issues. Not sure about that interior! But, the car appears mechanically strong and the guy says the car is a great driver.

What is it with these questionable interiors? Geesh whizz...

 

Ooh! That interior.....yikes. Put some dough into the interior and have the correct seats done in Tan perhaps.

The price is right. I dont know what an interior would cost but i would guess upwards of 5k to get it right. Maybe less if you can find a set of seats from a wreck.

 

So if all other items checked out, this car isnt a bad buy then? He says hes negotiable as well which means it can probably be bought for even less. It IS a QV, it IS a cabriolet, and its freshly serviced with 4 brand new TRX tires.

Of course.... that interior....but you could piece that along at your leisure. And, youd have to get some new rims & tires. Hmmm....????

 

That interior is nothing $60 of black Leatherique can't fix!

 

It has been said that the stock seat in these cars aren't comfortable, for this price, drive and enjoy. I paid 23K for my clean stock 87 3.2 Mondi Cab. They are out there. Most everything for sale at about 30K has been for sale for a long time. Talk to the owners and get a newer more stock one for not much more money if that's what you want. But what if you could get this one for 15K?

Agreed on whats out there. I dont think $15K will buy this car, but the guy did say it was negotiable but not to lowball him. Fair enough. Even at $18K it could be an OK buy. if it is as mechanically sound as advertised. I just need to see more cars so I can determine what different amounts get you. Original is preferred but tasteful, careful updates dont bother me. Sometimes the extra money doesnt get you that much more in a car. Prices are all over the place.

Sounds like you got a good deal on your car, Dirk. '86+ cars are overall more desireable than the '85 and lower cars. The 3.2 motor is pretty ambitious from what I hear. Havent rode in one yet, just a couple QV's thus far.

 

It's probably worth $15-16k. I wouldn't pay more than that knowing the really good qv cabs are low $20ks and the best of the best is worth about $27k. That $27k is based on an absoutely cherry '85 with super low miles, original owner, meticulously serviced, just completed major, climate controlled garage forever, etc. etc. which did sell on ebay several months ago.

 

I don't know how closely you looked at the pictures, but the guy turned the center console into a tribute to the McDonald's colors, he also swapped out the shifter, changed the steering wheel,etc. Unless you can find a wrecked Mondial, trying to restore that stuff is going to cost an absolute fortune. Front seats alone are about 3 grand, rears a little less. The console panel is unobtanium, so you will definitely need to get first dibs on a wreck or have one made for you. The rear portion of the center console is going to have to be redyed. The steering wheel, if you can find one is about $500.00. Now you are a few thousand into the car and you haven't even addressed the mechanical bits. There are nicer cars out there that are similarly priced, I would pass on this one.

 

Yeah, I looked carefully and do realize whats "dodgy" about the interior. mechanically the car is apparently all there though with a major just done on the car. Its not as if its a train wreck mechanically. At least I dont think so. But yeah, the more I look at it the more I think that at some point the car was owned by a suspect individual trying to bling it out. I dont think you'd get too hurt at $18K.... its a QV, its red, and its a cabriolet. If its well-sorted the car isnt horrible. If it just had aftermarket front seats I could live with that.

As Ferrari guru Phil T. once told me, never buy a car with an awful interior, because you will be reminded of your compromise every time you get in the car.

Keep looking...there are some fantastic deals right now on Mondials of all stripes.

As for the major...I would want you to see records to support that, as well as at least a recent service history. Everyone's definition of a major is different. To some, a major is just belts and bearings. Also remember, unless its a fix anything you can find job, the odds are things like the shift shaft seal, wheel bearings, misc. hoses, fuel lines, fusebox, radiator, spark plug wires, electrical accessories, clutch slave cylinder, CV boots, and any one of a billion other things could still be crappy on a car with a fresh "major"...and all of them are expensive.

 

Yes, I also think that the interior is a little goofy, but in a somewhat cool way. It is an 80's car, after-all. If I saw that Mondial at Cars and Coffee I would definitely walk over and take a look.

I think that whoever buys that Mondial needs to have a sense of humor and forget about trying to restore the interior. Maybe go all the way and install new wheels, lower the car, install a supercharger. (A turbocharger with big-time 80's lag would be even better.) Not every Ferrari out there has to look just like it came from the factory. (As long as some do!)

 

In the spirit of the McViper, this is the McMondial! All it needs is yellow wheels to be complete.

Great points, Joe. Yeah, I pretty much ruled it out but like to get some feedback from "da boys" here too. Still new at this and the more info, the better. Every car for sale has its own story and pros/cons.

For whatever reason I seem to be turned off by cosmetic issues and bad interiors almost more than a car needing a service right away. I dunno... the mechanical part actually seems cheaper and easier to "sort" than interior problems or rust. Hmmm???

If interested I would take it for a drive and see how the seats feel.
If it drives and feels right go for it, you wont lose any more than if ya bought a new kia.

 

I dont think Ill even bother. No need for me toi drive 6 hours just to see a car I probably dont want to buy. If it had JUST the seats Id be more into it. The rest of it though....UGH.

 

oooh that interior.... PM me, I have been toying with the notion of selling my 85 cabriolet so I can get a 355. I am not 100% yet but hit me up and I can get you some pictures!

 

What I don't get are the idiots that replace the classic Ferrari round ball shifter knob with a $9.99 Pep Boys ricer knob and actually think it is an improvement. Why not just replace the metal shifter gate with some red neon glow plastic while you're at it?

 

It's probably an expensive shift knob from the 80's now just looks really cheap. Kind of a like a Koenig body kit. Back in the day they were spendy, not they look incredibly dated. (Cool in their 80's kind of way....)

There's probably a mondi cab around somewhere with one of the ferrari parts houses that has a complete interior for transplant. I would guess it's $5K or more for the parts, and a long weekend of fitting, to make it right.

There's no accounting for bad taste....

They spent all of that money upgrading (?) the interior. I'm a little surprised there's no yellow pinstriping and fancier wheels.
