Hi all. I have recently published my "work in progress" website on Classic Cars in Rhodesia see http://www.classiccarsinrhodesia.co.za/index.html I wonder if anyone has any information or photographs of Ferrari / Maserati / Lamborghini or any other exotic cars in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe please. I have a few cars listed (only Lamborghini is on the site at present, I have very little on the other two makes) but I will try get them up today Most grateful for any info / photographs please, credit will be given Regards Wayne M. Kennerley Wales, UK
Fascinating site! A question, though -- are/were there no Porsches in Rhodesia? (I did not see Porsche in the list.)
Hi Tony I am sure there were plenty of Porsches, I have just not come across info/photos of any of them. Wayne
Hello Wayne, I have been there 3 times already on hunting safari's, and it is my favorite place on earth! I have several friends living there still and I plan on going back again soon. I pray that things turn around there soon...such a shame to hear the story's of what it was like pre 1980!! Frank
Perusing this interesting thread, reminded me of one of my favourite Ferrari's, a 1950 166 Inter, with Vignale coachwork, being up for sale in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) in September 1995. In the Classic and Sportscar Magazine, September 1995 issue, there are two Ferrari's for sale in Zimbabwe on page 137, within the Private Gallery Sales page. As i post from Work and have no scanner, i am replicating the original wording. 1) "1950 Ferrari 166 Chassis 069S. Unique unmolested, unrestored. Michelloti designed, aluminium bodied sports Berlinetta with coachwork by Vi(g)nale. All original drivetrain with jewel-like two litre V12 overhead cam alloy engine. Believed 37th production Ferrari built. Rarely for sale. Suitable museum or pride of private collection. Relocation overseas forces sale. Contact owner on fax Harare, Zimbabwe 335-457 Offers in region of (pounds) 150 000". In the thumbnail photograph, its colour looks like a deep Maroon colour and is RHD. Only one Vignale Berlinetta made, so very rare. 2) "1956 Ferrari 250 GT Chassis 0541 Prepared for Mille Miglia and Tour de France races, this car has been stripped and every part restored, including numerous performance engine modifications, followed by a bare metal respray on alloy coachwork, and interior retrimmed in dark green leather. Genuinely faultless and mechanically perfect in every way. An ideal vintage racer. Relocation overseas forces sale. Contact owner on fax Harare, Zimbabwe 335-457 Offers invited" In the thumbnail photograph the car looks like a Canary Yellow colour and is LHD. Obviously due to Zimbabwe's (Rhodesia) collapse, these two Models are long gone, but as they at one time did reside in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe, they are worthy to be included in this thread.
Wow NEP, you are brilliant - I have a note that there was a 166 in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe and now I have the details, you are a star. Now to find a copy of the magazine Thanks Wayne
Wayne, you mentioned a 3500 GT Spyder Vignale. No more info available about this car? Sorry - no infos in my records reg. Maserati in Rhodesia. Ciao! Walter
not sure -but the Spyder Vignale might be #101.1051. This car was from Jan./Febr. 1971 until 1988 in South Africa. It returned to Italy in Sept. 1988. Today its still in that country. Sorry - no further infos of this car and its African location. Problem is on your website, that you don`t list the period your cources are refering. Ciao! Walter
Thanks Walter, unfortunately my sources have not given a period, but it would have been around the 1970s. Regards Wayne
Not sure Wayne if you have viewed this Website, with historic pictures and stories about Motor Racing in Angola, Mozambique and Rhodesia. Lots of lovely old Ferrari Corsa photographs in Angola and Mozambique. http://motorsportinangola.blogspot.com/2010/01/number-56.html
Hi NEP Thanks I had seen that website, still need to sort through the Rhodesian cars. I have also found out that although the owner of that 166 and the 250GT lived in Zimbabwe the cars were actually in New Zealand, so no Rhodesian / Zimbabwean connection unfortunately. Regards Wayne
Hi Walter, as mentioned on the website it was white with black interior. If #1151 was in South Africa c1971-1988 it could well have been in Rhodesia in the 1960s (unless #1151 has verified history elsewhere of course). Regards Wayne
Hi Wayne Did some research on 069 S and it is not a Berlinetta, but a Vignale Coupe, one of six built. Click on the Link below for the history of 069S. http://www.barchetta.cc/english/All.Ferraris/Detail/069S.166Inter.htm Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi, There was a Khamsin for sale for quite a while in Zimbabwe. Don't know what happened to it but know it was chassis 435 a RHD drive car taken out there by it's owner from the UK. Was on Ebay several times. Here's a picture I saved from said auction. Bal Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Bal Thanks for that, I do have the car on the website. as far as I know the car is still for sale. Wayne
Hi all, I have recently found out that until a few years ago the following Ferrari lived in Harare, Zimbabwe - Does anyone have any details of which cars they are? Ferrari Daytona, 328GTB, 400GT, 412i, and 250GTE Regards Wayne
Hi All, I have been told that a rough Maserati 3500GT was for sale in Zimbabwe a few years ago and may have been acquired by a diplomat working there - Has anyone any idea which car this is please Thanks Wayne
Wayne, #101.184 was in 2007 for sale in Afria in bad condition and #101.190 (color: red) was for sale there in 2006 in partly dismantled condition. Another canditate could be #101.2854 that had a so-called "Zagato-body" fitted and was located in South Africa for while. It came to the UK in 2001 and was offered for sale in that country in Febr. 2007. THats all I have. Ciao! Walter
