I'm looking to place a current value on (and possibly find the best venue to sell) a set of 431 American Heritage reprints of Audubon's Birds of America paintings. Apparently these were created as a limited edition of 750 sets back in 1966. Almost the entire run was purchased by one John L. Young who went on to market them himself.

I have an original invoice & his "appraisal" from when they were purchased back in 2003, but would love to have any other input as to possible value.

How big are these prints? Are the double elephant or smaller?

I suppose the only thing I love more than Ferraris is Audubons, although I'd never claim to be an "expert".

I do know there are only 4 portfolios that I've ever heard of (save the quadrupeds and the octavos)

    They are :

    Havell: original edition from ~1840-1950s

    Bien lithograph from the 1860's

    Amsterdam made in ~1972

    Abbeville made in ~1985

I'm afraid I've never heard of the edition you have.

My neighbor is a major Audubon expert and dealer. If you go to his website I'm sure someone at his gallery can help you.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not any kind of expert on prints - so I don't know a double elephant from a single one (but probably could tell an Indian elephant from an African one).

The documentation I have (from a 1984 Greenville Sun article on the gentleman who was selling the sets) describes it as 367 prints @ 10.75"x13" and 64 prints @ 13.25"x21.5", along with an introductory book & display cabinet.

Audubons were printed on double elephants, ~27x40 inches, they should never be cut down, needless to say.

I guess they're a bit busy, as I didn't receive any response to an email sent to the address on their website.

You might want to telephone the gallery. They have been rather stressed lately as Joel Oppenheimer was injured in a fall at home and has not been able to work downtown in several weeks. I believe his wife, Laura, or son David should be around.
