Is it just me or is the back end of the 458 Italia really ugly? I still much prefer the body styling of the 360 over the subtle changes on the 430 and even more so over the 458.

Bringing the rear lights out of the bodywork was, in my opinion, a big mistake...

I can't say I agree with you. I take issue with the mustache on the very front, but beyond that I think this car is styled very well.

I like the back end of all cars mentioned (360 & 430 and 458). The design team at PF is doing well for Ferrari IMO.

The ass of the 458, is the prettiest part of the car. The nose is the least attractive part of the car.

I know I am in a very small minority when I say this, but I just do not like the 458. I do not like the front, do not like the back, it only looks good in my eyes from the side profile. It looks a like a jagged Artega GT. Compare it to the beautiful, roundish, F355 and I just want to go back to the '90s.

The 458 is the first car I have ever seen where I actually want to change elements of the design. I would give it double rear lights on each side, make 2 exhausts instead of 3, and get rid of the intakes around the hood which absolutely kill the front.

Granted, these are just my opinions on the 458, not fact, anyone can feel free to think otherwise.

Based on looks/styling alone, I think pf and Ferrari have worked together to hit a home run. All of us with the older cars tend to have a lot of bias to our personal year or model. We have been in constant media blitz with this car for a good year or so, seeing it on every magazine cover and Auto review known to man, so I can understand if people are a little sick of seeing it. However, harken back to more than a year ago when the first official images of the car were released. I believe the overwhelming response for the design was highly favorable. I don't remember the initial response for the 360, f430, 599, and California being as overwhelmingly favorable as the 458. Sure, I too would prefer rear quad lights instead of the 2, but that is a little piece of one truly masterful creation. The looks and styling alone will make it a more desirable car for most people over the Mclaren or Merc SLS. The most desirable of Ferraris have been able to stir up the emotion of the masses. I think Ferraris latest mid engine V8 design does exactly that.

I think it would look better if the black grill extended the entire length like a challenge grill. The way it is now reminds me of a mustache.

Nothing beats the rear of a F355 with the challenge grill...thats sex on wheels.

The 458 is the best looking car that Pinninfarina has drawn since the 355. Period!

Almost can agree with this. Most definitely a massive improvement over the extremely ugly 430.

It's the 355 that sparked my OP. I watched "The Rock" again last night, which featured a car chase with a yellow 355 spider, lots of great shots from behind and it made me think about the rear design of the 348, 355, 360, 430 and 458 series.

I totally agree that you can't beat the back of the 355, grille or otherwise. When I bought my 360, I had a look at the F430 but even though it's an updated version of its predecessors, I just can't bring myself to like the rear lights protruding out of the body work.

When I first saw the 458 Italia in the flesh at Goodwood, I stood behind it for a spell, trying my hardest to see Pininfarina's vision but all I see is the head of a praying mantis.

Styling-wise, the 360 has everything I like about Ferrari styling (Pininfarina). The rounded air scoops look so much more fluid than the "cut and shut" linear intakes on the 458, the rear looks like Pinifarina opened the "box of how car rears should look" and copied its contents. And the side profile... well, I can just stand and look at it for hours.

I love the whole series, don't get me wrong, I just don't get why the Pininfarina guys moved the lights out of the bodywork - perhaps it was a copy/paste blunder!

The ass end of the 458 is spectacular.

And I don't know why, but as soon as I saw the title of this thread, before even opening it, I knew the poster would have below his name:

Wasn't wrong. Those critical of it are probably the ones who don't, and never will, own one.

Well that's a shame... And I thought we were all adults. Also a bit alarming that after my 20 years of working very hard - hard enough at least to be able to very comfortably afford a very nice house and a relatively new Ferrari, my financial status, buying power and views on automotive design are reduced to how long I've been on this site...

You, my learned friend, appear to have a problem with freedom of speech and opinion. If you own a 458, then it's a fine selection - at least have the decency to allow people to express their views, good or bad. Nearly all of the posts are in disagreement with what I posted. which I think is great as it lets me know perhaps I need to look at it more and try and understand and appreciate the design choices, which I'm sure I will.

Or perhaps you didn't like my use of the word 'unsightly' - perhaps an overkill I agree, but it was meant in relation to the same marque series. If you think that, why not just say that...?

You have a good angle with this debate until you bought the Enzo into it.

The ugliest car that Ferrari has ever made, except the FXX which is so fncken ugly that the only car that is as ugly is another FXX.

The back, the front, the sides, the interior... makes me sad to be a Ferrari fan. The design reminds me of 90's concept sketches, and more recently the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Yes Toggie, the car is better with the "optional attachments".However the matenance is very high and in Ca, at least, it's all done on Rodeo Drive.Leave these two options off and enjoy looking in the rear view mirror at all the people checking out your beautiful tight butt.

I absolutely love the way the lights rise out of the bodywork. A stroke of design genius.

Dear me... So you have to subscribe to have a valid point of view? For that matter, you have to own to have a valid point of view? I'm guessing you might be a little up one's self, as they say. Oh, and I disagree with the OP.

I like the 458 a lot - especially in darker colours - but am not a fan of the rear lights on modern Ferraris - I think 4 is better than 2 and somehow the Enzo-esque protruding lights look a bit like they were stuck on as an after thought

Will not be able to buy one for a very long time anyway, so I'll just stick to driving my lowly 355 :)
