So this is VERY last minute because my mom just got off the phone with the doctor, and he wants to make a last minute change.

Background: My mom has Angioedema - Idiopathic Form.

Tomorrow she is supposed to have rotator cuff surgery. The new anesthesiologist wants to use nerve block instead of general anesthesia. My mom is thinking that might be too dangerous and would rather have GA and is now very nervous as to which is right.

Absolutely any insight anyone could share would be tremendously appreciated.

    Thanks!

Not to sound like a broken record, but if you up to Silver ($15) there are LOTS of docs
that hang out there that seldom come here. Just sayin' - you might get a MUCH
    stronger response there.

    Good luck.

Ya know, I was actually thinking that and had been meaning to subscribe anyways.

    Thanks for the heads up!

You're welcome - I have no doubt that the docs in Silver/Rossa will chime in soon...

    Stephen,

I'm just a Pre-Med student, but I'll put my 2 cents in anyway. From what I've heard Angioedema causes swelling of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Side effects of nerve block anesthesia include increased pain and swelling as well as allergic reactions. Therefore, I would go with general anesthesia instead of nerve block because the risks of nerve block don't exactly go too well with your mom's condition. However, if the anesthesiologist feels the best course of action would be to use nerve block then I would take his/her advice. Best of luck to your mom during surgery. I'm sure she'll be just fine. :)
