Cars back in the old days have only what we need. A steering wheel, gear level and some pedals (radio as well for the matter), much like toilet bowls and paper. Our current fleet of cars now have buttons which I can never understand. Like what TopGear said, you need to be a rocket scientist to figure what they do.
