i believe the tartan interiors are fairly rare for 911s... in fact, i've only seen these blue/green tartan a few times... was the tartan removed on the door panel in this car? the few tartans i've seen had the fabric on the door panel as well? anyone know the option codes for the tartan interiors? While I don't know the correct answer, I can say with 100% certainty that the cars with tartan seats "and" door panels I have seen were all from the mid to late 70's...........never saw one from 1980 + with any tartan cloth, but I am sure they must exist somewhere in other markets, as evidenced here. Sorry, can't help on interior trim codes that old.
I once saw a 1982, German market 911 SC which had a tartan interior just like that in your pictures, and I dont believe the tartan was on the doors. Outside of the car was silver.
Kind of anecdotal, but on pages 40-41 of the old Great Marques Porsche book there is a 1979 911 Turbo photo spread showing tartan on the seats but not on the door panels. This book was published in 1980, so odds are huge that car was new and original at the time. If you want to talk to a restorer who is a Porsche 911 expert, you might email Brian Doherty -- contact info at http://www.caporsche.net/contact.html. You could also check with Autos International in Escondido, CA -- they do only Porsche interiors and would have a definitive answer.
Tartan dress is listed as part # 999.551.083.40, with green being "2AC". This is from the 1978 listing, but I think it was the same through 1980, which may have been the last year.
Turbo seat without leather (Scottish Tweed) most were ordered in Europe, weight saver cold places prefer cloth. http://www.club911.net/articles/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=103
Thanks all for helping me piece this together. This seems to be an interesting SC, also with sunroof delete, factory installed aluminum racing calipers (?) up front.... as well as some other options. Speedo is in KPH. The "racing" calipers might be these? http://www.stoddard.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=58084
For a selection of tartan plaids and samples of authentic, OEM quality materials and the best upholstery work in the country, contact Tony Garcia at: http://www.autobahninteriors.com/ (see page 9 of his 911 portfolio for an idea of the plaids he can offer ). Re the calipers, I doubt very much they are the 4 piston 930 / 917 units shown in the Stoddard blurb, since they seem to be on the front only. That would cause a huge imbalance with standard rear calipers, and probably wouldn't be very workable or safe with the standard 19mm master cylinder. Aluminum "M" calipers were standard on the front of SC models, but it sounds so much sexier when you specifically highlight the item in an ad.
Correct.....starting in late 1975 3.0 Carrera's in the ROW (not the 2.7's) started getting those larger calipers on the front that later became standard on the SC..........
They look like the 930 calipers from 78?-89. It may be a special wishes car..lots of neat goodies came from that department if you had the cash. BTW- You may want to post this on Pelican..those guys know their 911's.
I had a '78 Euro that had black material wtih a thin pinstrip like material on the main part of the seats (where the tartan is on the pictures you posted), but still had the vinyl on the interior doors...the rear seats were all vinyl- they did not match the material on the front seats. A neighbor had an '87 US model with similar pattern on the seats as my car, and it was also on the interior door sills. I guess my point is, without helping you as I don't know for sure unfortunatly, is there were all sorts of things that could have been done. My guess is the car you show in the picture is stock- that the tartan seats and non-tartan interior doors is correct for that car. I bought my '78 in '88 and was glad it still looked "current"- at that time I wouldn't have wanted a car with the tartan or op art interior (which is wild- often in the euro early 928's or 924 turbos and such). Now that these cars are older I'd love a car with that sort of interior!!!! Do you have more pictures of the car you originally posted?? Are you looking to buy it? I'd love to see that interior in person- I've never seen a tartan interior that color before- the only ones I've seen in pictures were the black/red tartan. As a prior poster said, these interiors were much more common in Europe than the US where interiors tended to be solid vinly or leather. The picture you posted shows the interior to be in awesome condition-and I think those are factory sports seats to boot! How is the rest of the car? -Andrew
Thanks for the input everyone. I am considering purchasing this car. It is unique and I really like that it was configured with the "sunroof delete" option. Does anyone know if cars that had european delivery were configured with euro bumpers as well as speedo in kph and odo in km? I have a few other pictures of the car but mostly not good quality...
