I have the Sensor, the newer one...but it takes a 1 1/4 in. wrench for the nut part of the sensor.....Can I use a Cresent wrench? Is there Access to do this from under the Car? I will have it on a lift, but it seems like its hard to get a wrench on that big Nut.....

You don't need to take the engine out to get to it, do you :D ???

    any hints would be appreciated...thanks

for the old one,, I just cut the wire off, and used a 16 point socket.

Torquing the new one,, takes some time.
I wrapped the threads in teflon tape.
I believe I had a shortie, 32mm open ended wrench.
Tilted up high,,, with a screwdriver in the closed end, as a tee wrench.

    Good luck.

I am looking at doing this myself, and it looks to me like the best tool for the job will be a 32mm offset box end wrench. I haven't done it yet, and I don't have a 32mm offset box end wrench. I'd advise against using an adjustable (crescent) wrench. If you're going to have the car on a lift, then you're ahead of the game.

These don't require much torque to remove/install. Get a cheap socket from Autozone and a grind a opening down one side. This allows the harness pigtail to hang out the side.

Woody, can you even get a socket on that sending unit? I know it can fit over the wiring harness, but it looks to me like it won't clear the bolt that extends from the flared bottom of the transaxle.

First, I should have given credit and said upfront that this tip came from someone else on this board, and second, that I used this on my '82 308 where it worked like a champ. On the '82, it would have been difficult to get much else in the way of a wrench on that sending unit. Since my 308 has what is known as the 'later' sending unit, I assumed a 328 would be the same, but perhaps it is different?
