All: I'm sure many have had this question. I'm also sure someone on the tread knows the answer after they did their investigation. What software is the best for storing, sorting, categorizing digital pictures and easy to delete duplicates? In the past Kodak offer a free version. Placing pictures simply in MS Documents just seems to gathers a bunch of pictures. Thanks to all that could provide some helpfull! Michael
http://picasa.google.com/ You can set up a free account here with tons of online storage... the photo editing tools are easy to use as well. I have 209 albums in there taking up 15.48GB (I pay a little each year for additional storage). I upload all my original files for high res photos and videos.. and I have them all perfectly organized and geo-tagged. As an additional backup, every few months or so I back up all my photos (and other files) onto an external hard drive that I keep safely in my house. So in order for me to lose my data, I'd have to have my laptop lost/broken/stolen, my external hard drive lost/broken/stolen, AND Google's server's to completely fail... ALL at the same time.
+1 Read the "intro" documentation first and you'll be golden.... As with Apple's iPhoto you've gotta work the way it wants you to or stuff will get messed up - I had to modify my workflow, but once you get it down it's an *awesome* app. Cheers, Ian
Has anyone have concern with all the data that Google collects when they are using for "free" this program? Very interesting story on CNBC discussing Google.
Don't think of it as some creepy programmer sitting there looking at your pictures and emails... Google just crawls the text of your content to detect specific keywords so they can show you relevant advertisements. ie: If you have a picture and the caption says "this is my Ferrari", they will show you advertisements from people who bid on that "Ferrari" keyword.
Flickr, I pay to be a 'pro', because then I can see the full size, hi resolution pictures. You can turn the pictures to private so no one can see them if you don't want to share them. You can organize them via Sets and Galleries.
I load everything onto Iphoto and then upload everything onto Shutterfly. They charge nothing for "storage." I have about 30k photos there. About every 6 months or so I request a DVD for all my photos (about $30/10k photos). When I receive them, I put them straight into my 45 min fire-proof safe. I also back up my computer onto a hard drive periodically. Very little chance of losing my photos.
