And he thoroughly describes the Ferrari 2500, with Lancia V8 engine, 8000 rpms. A car which he won the 1956 championship. He also points out this type is the same in which Ascari drove into the ocean in 1955 Monaco.

The Isle of Man TT must be about the closest thing left to how it was back then. I wonder how much longer that will last.

 

having driven around the track, albiet in a renault twingo, you can still feel the pulls and bumps when watching these videos. tasty.

 

I wouldn't worry, the Isle Of Man/Northern Ireland motorcycle road racing scene isn't going anywhere.

Judging from the openness of the cockpit and period safety gear, how on earth did any of them make it to retirement age ?

Watching JMF blast through Monaco without fanfare is astonishing. Even if it was indeed filmed at 6 am, I'm certain we'd see a minimum of a few thousand fans scattered everywhere behind barricades if it was shot today...

Halfway through the clip he adds the following comment:

That was cool--I always love seeing how stoic he was behind the wheel.

 

Footage is from 1970 & 1971. So many fatalaties shown in the 9 clips on YouTube. Sad. Otherwise, an amazing film.
