I'll be in Poughkeepsie this weekend for a wedding. I've got most of Saturday off. Any suggestions re: things to do, places to go, car related or not is fine. Thanks for your suggestions. Ron
Where is the wedding? I go married there 2 years ago at the grandview. It was great. If you don't mind a short drive go over to the main street in new patly and walk around. It's probably 20 mins away but it's a nice town.
Culinary Institute of America (Hyde Park) is a great place for a gourmet meal. Hyde Park is also home to one of the Vanderbilt mansions.
Rhinebeck is a nice town. Just check out the town going in and out of the shops. New pales is more college hippieish. Rhinebeck is a little more upscale. Poughkeepsie is a city. I'd stay to the first two towns.
Head East to Amenia and check out Cascade Mountain Winery. There are lots of twisty roads on the way and the food at the winery is very good.
Holy crap why can't anyone spell New Paltz properly?! Poor OP will never find it if he's looking for it! That is definitely the most fun town you'll find in the region. College hippieish, yes, but if you dig college town nightlife it's good.
Locust Grove is the F.B. Samuel Morse estate....as in Morse Code, and is located on Rt 9 about a mile south of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. Morse was quite the artist & collector so the estate that overlooks the Hudson River is interesting from that perspective. Currently, the site is used for all sorts of catered events, such as weddings, parties & seminars. We have plenty of roads in the area for some good spirited driving. In fact, the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Empire State Region - Ferrari Club of America held a drive & luncheon in June & we drove throughout Dutchess County that day. Enjoy the weekend.
Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. I ended up going to New Paltz on my free day and had a great time visiting antique and craft shops and even scored some great bargains at a garage sale. Tons of beer related items. Thanks again, Ron
