I've had a number of conversations (or dialogue thanks Julia) with Paul from Motorclassica and believe he is on the right track. Being the first of its kind is always going to be difficult and getting support from true enthusiasts is the only way it'll be a success.

Hopefully we can get a display down there and support it from a business perspective also.

    Bring on the glamour.

As BJ says, the head judge is a very astute guy, the bulk of judging at these events is done via tick sheet under the instruction of the head judge, this guy is being assisted by Stirling Moss and you would think that he would have a fair idea of how things should be but in saying that most of these "no budget" restos are done to a standard that is far superior to what the factory standard was in the day. Most high expense restorations are done on the basis of how the factory should have done it and I personally think that can be a good thing but it is also great to see original low mileage original old cars in thier original state. All those cars at PB have perfect gaps and lines ect, there is no way they were presented like that new but if the manufacturers had todays technology things may have been different. You have to remember that all of these pre-war cars were painted with a brush and although there are a few cars around that have had this technique faithfully reproduced it's just not the done thing these days, I only know of one person here in Australia that is capable of doing this correctly and he is an older guy who has now retired. The over restored cars also bring new collectors onto the scene all that shiny stuff just gets them in, if you had a dead original Silver Ghost with paint on it that was almost matt finish most would look and say nice old car but if it is finished with a high gloss chassis and mirror like bodywork the wow factor kicks in and all of a sudden you have a couple of people saying wow I would like to build a car like that. Trying to get the next generation to preserve these old cars is going to be a huge hill to climb so if shiny does it then make em shiny I say. As for who wins the show put yourself in the head judges shoes, you cant reward one person for putting in effort because everyone displaying a car has done that, if you give the tupperware to the most original car that does'nt present as well as others you end up getting stoned to death and have no entrants the following year. This is where the organizers have to make a decision and from what I understand they are ticking the same boxes here that are ticked at Pebble Beach and IMO thats the way to get people still trying to better each other and coming back every year, it's also the way to get the public coming back year after year.

No planes.. recently did trial instructional flight which went well, mate runs http://www.centralwestflying.com/ so dabbling at the edges atm.

Would love to do "lap of Australia" in something tough like this http://www.ias.com/en/ad1829.aspx and of course if had Veyron $ and the relevant experience who wouldn't love P-51 etc! http://www.warbirdconnection.com/sold.html

btw: 1/5th is huge.. is that typical scale? Where do you fit it? flys?

Have been for a ride in one of those De Haviland Beavers, great fun. The guy was saying that due to the wet take off/ landing they have to replace the prop every 4 weeks.=$$$

Am in no major hurry.. got another couple years intensive business stuff to do so will keep slowly working on it and researching..

Cool.. way to go.. too many nazis and anti-fun PC types in control in many aspects of life now.

I believe the American rocket enthusiasts (still?) have/had big problems post 9/11, "terrorism" and all that (naturally).

Very interesting insights. It's a shame if cars need to be 'Ralphed' in order to attract new blood to the classic or vintage car scene, but I suppose it might be better than the alternative (the cars are left unmaintained and unloved to just waste away beyond the point of no return). It's a tough one.

A lot of the time they are not ralphed, it is when somebody is spending a lot of money they want maximum results, you can tell someone that a car was never perfect, especially handbuilt ones but it can be made perfect, most people (just instinct I guess) say well lets make it perfect. (the way the manufacturer would have done it if they had the technology & budget)

Its like US restored E-Types, so often the leather is a better quality, crome is perfect and paint and body gaps to perfect.
E-types were never in the same league as a RR or MB in the build quality.
Its sad how so many cars "Are Ralphed"

Ralphed to me is the strawberry jam/shat thing, bit like Lara Bingle, when you start with a very good base it's different, was actually a shame to have to put paint on this 300.
