Once I was talking on my cell phone and was also holding a bag of stuff from KFC in one hand, and a large bucket of KFC chicken in the other. I put the bucket of chicken on the roof of my car, opened the door, handed the bag of stuff to my GF, put the phone away, got in and started the car.

Drove away, and got about 50' across the mall parking lot when I heard a thump.....looked up and saw the bucket of KFC go flying off the roof, hit the rear spoiler of the car and explode all over the place.......kind of a deep fried cluster bomb.

Stopped the car to analyze the mess, there as trail of chicken bits everywhere and the people who saw it were laughing at me.

I was following a car one time and something was on the roof but I was a little too far away to tell what it was. As I got closer I could see it was a womens handbag as I was trying to get closer to inform her all of a sudden I saw debris flying out. As I drove under the debris I realized it was cash. I had to stop and pick it up but then she was gone. I picked up $82.00.

    True story

....I once worked for a caterer on weekends and on one particular weekend one of the girls was taking home a full turkey w/stuffing as leftovers. I get in my car and leave as I was waving goodbye to the three girls that car-pooled together. The two girls get in as the driver puts the turkey on the roof of her car to wave back. I guess she forgot about that turkey and proceeded to drive away - turkey and stuffing everywhere.

When she told me that story, I couldn't stop laughing.

My late father once drove off with +/- $500 of repro automotive rubber on the roof of his car. No idea how he didn't notice it falling off.

I was working a summer painting job with my friend, and he always insisted we change out of our work clothes before getting in his car. We stopped for gas 15 minutes down the road and he realized he'd put his wallet on the rear bumper while opening the trunk, and it had fallen off somewhere along the way.

The worst part of it was that he had his green card in there, and that was a lot of trouble to replace. INS didn't like it when a green card went missing.

Not quite the same thing, but an engineer I know/worked with once left his clipboard inside the engine shroud of a jet engine that was going for a short test flight.

When the jet landed, they retrieved a melted, singed, mangled clipboard and presented it (wrapped in a ribbon) to the absent-minded engineer.

I left my dads wallet on the roof of the car, we only drove about 5 miles so when we got home and realized, we simply drove back the route we came and there it was sitting in the middle of the 1st intersection we would have driven through. I calmly put my hazard lights on, kinda drove awkwardly to the middle, opened my door and grabbed the wallet going through the intersection. Needless to say that was the 1st and last time I ever left anything on the roof.

Ironically, there was just a news story about a woman who left her engagement ring on the trunk of her car and drove away. She retraced her route with her fiance and found it!

My first car was an alfa spider so it had a soft top and i would use the roof all the time to put things on until i opened the car. I left my wallet once (never found it..that hurt my...wallet.) , my college back pack with my books and all , and one time i drove away with a pile of CD on the roof which made a very loud noise when i drove off as they splattered on the floor.

I once left my cellphone on the roof of my car.
The drive home from work is very hilly with many varied turns, it surprises me still that it did not fall off in transit.

I've left textbooks, lunch, and my cellphone on my roof. Not all at the same time.

I once was paying my subcontractors in cash on a Friday, I had about $16,000.00 Cash in a zip up canvas bag (the bank gives you) I had just paid some framers and sat the bag on the rear bumper of my truck..

30 min later driving down the freeway my heart stopped! I literally flipped out as you can imagine.

Pulled over and I couldn't believe it was still sitting on my bumper. I was weak in the knees for hours...

A pair of tennis shoes on the trunk of my old 6 series BMW, I drove about two miles until I pulled into a 7-11 for gas & noticed them.

Many years ago I left my Daytimer wallet on the roof, at night, and jumped on the freeway. I was able to recover everything, but in 15 minutes credit cards and cash were scattered over 1/4 mile.

I am sure it was humorous to see me dodging cars doing 60 mph on the 10 Freeway in Santa Monica.

Keys, tools, cellphone, sweaters and jackets, letters and packages to mail, coffee and sodas...u name it.

Yesterday, I set a tall can of soda on the rear bumper of the 308, forgot it was there, and backed about 35 feet without spilling it.

Pretty sure I left a pair of $275 Gucci sunglasses on either my roof or trunk. Took them off while throwing a football with my brother and then drove off without them on my face. Turned back and couldn't find them. Oh well, my stupidity ruled that day... :(
