Thoughts about 'roids

I don't like that players have used them, however, once the government got involved I quickly began to not care.

 

The government HAD to.

The teams weren't. I mean, if I was caught using drugs and I worked a McDonalds I would be gone the first time and they wouldn't even talk to me again.

If you are pro player, you get to dope up with whatever how many time before they get rid of you for good?

 

sends the wrong message to kids..

 

So does letting a murderer out after 3-7 years.

So does sentencing a person to community service after 9 DUI's.

So do a lot of things, but as a society we either could not care less, we look the other way, or we cannot afford to enforce penalties as written. I don't like it either, but I have no answers.

If all the players had roids I wouldnt see a problem w it if they consented to do it

I can also understand why parents dont want their kids role models on roids

I used them on and off and I can see the attraction, helps you slim down faster & get stronger

As you get older they are better for you especially HGH & Test which the male body lacks later on in life

 

that time came and passed, we didn't care during the mid to late 90's through the early 2000's, we only started caring when jose canseco came out with his book. in my opinion, the mlb may seem like they're half-assing their stance on ped's right now simply because the game has cleaned itself up 10-fold since the steroid era.

 

Great documentary - highly recommend it.

I just watched it to and it was great. Not that I am all for roids, but it does make a good point about how its all blown out of proportion. Quite amazes me when we have other drugs today, like antidepressants which in some cases have worse side effects, but its fine to use.

 

Watched it and had just about the same reaction as you. While I personally am against them, I'm rapidly moving towards simply not caring what everyone else does with their body. I particularly liked the part where they cornered Carl Lewis.

 

'Follow the $money$' pretty much explains it all, from the players(using) to the teams(benefitting) to the fans(more/bigger 'action') to the Feds ignoring it(bought and paid for by the leagues).

It's all in your viewpoint...except for the guys who eventually have to pay the price(hint: not the teams, fans, Feds).

 

That documentary doesn't quite cross the line to cheer leading for steroids, but it comes really close.

The wrestling brother, Mad Dog, who was one of the biggest users of steroids in the documentary, committed suicide in 2008.

Another thing to note about the documentary is how it shows the temporary nature of the gains that came from steroid use. All the guys on steroids in the movie are stuck on them for decades. The moment they go off, they start to lose their gains. The powerlifter brother, whose wife wanted him to quit, was sterile because of them and didn't even seem to want to go off them even for a while to have kids. And he said after his wife got pregnant, he was going right back on them.

 

I watched the whole thing. It sucked.

 

The issue I have with the movie is that it takes the common tactic of pointing fingers away from the main issue and points it at issues that aren't directly related to it.

The main issue is PED use in sports. In this case, the PED is anabolic steroids (the type of PED isn't important, ultimately). The film tries to say that anabolic steroids are safe because they are used in medicine, which has nothing to do with the main issue of PED usage in sports. It even points out that musicians and students use PEDs, and in many other areas of life, so athletes should be able to do so, too.

Really, all the film attempts to do is make steroid use acceptable because doctors use it to safely treat patients, and its use in sports is widespread, and peripherally, in other areas, too. It's the same reductio ad absurdum argument device, that left to its logical conclusion as the narrative in the film would lead you to believe, that oxygen is also PED that should/should not be banned based upon the mindless variables as displayed in the film.

On and on. This type of documentary does not manipulate me, and I'm a little surprised that it manipulated you to any extent given your propensity towards intellect over pig puckey.

In the end, the film did nothing to change my viewpoint that PED in sports = bad. All it did was try to cloud the issues for people that don't know better. That ain't you, Rob, and it sure as hell ain't me.

 

They are fine to use. If under a doctor's supervision and to treat a valid disorder - some of which could result in a side effect much worse such a suicide.

NOT the same thing as some bone head buying and taking steroids off of the street to pump up bigger guns. Or me high school kid doing the same.

Of all banned substances, I didn't expect Contador to test positive for Clenbuterol!?!

Generally speaking, it's used/abused in livestock settings or competitive body-building/fitness shredding strategy or for notable & rapid weight-loss. Also, it needs to be stacked / cycled - thus errant ingestion & accidental consumption isn't likely to yield a positive test (as claimed by Contador). Clen' does have a very slight but measurable anabolic effect as well. Otherwise, it's quite the stimulant, as aforementioned.

Does this mean he loses the crown? And if he tested positive during the race, what's the point in publicizing it now if he was wasn't penalized/DQ'ed then? Is there a 2nd/3rd strike or offense policy in such competitions?
