simple explanation i found on the net ... QUOTE The numbers describe the configuration of a binocular. Let's take 8x42 binoculars as an example. The first number (8) refers to the magnification, or, how many times closer an object will appear when looking through the binocular compared to looking through eyes only. The second number (42) indicates the diameter of the objective lens (the light-gathering lens) of the binocular and is measured in millimeters. Note: The diameter of the objective lens is directly related to the size of the binocular -- the larger the objective lens, the larger (and often brighter) the binocular. UNQUOTE

Wah why u ask me only? Its not like I am always stalking chio bu from long range there are a lot of bludders here with lens expertise .8x40 but the first number is the magnification how close you want to see the tits from afar and the second number 40 is how wide the lens is at the front, the bigger the brighter the image .if u go Hong Kong maybe u can pick up from this dealer usually the guys that specialize in telescope stock the higher powered binoculars. But if I am thinking what u need for, you might need to get one with image stabilizer like the Canon LOL or better put on the tripod. Then u got two hands free! http://www.grandeye.com.hk/
