Indeed! It was very videogame-like, the way how fast it shifts! There was no noticeable wait or pause in switching gears...
when i get my turbo 911, i will get the pdk. seems like the pdk is the most popular tranny for this vehicle.
Its pretty amazing. The only thing that kind of bugged me was that the tranny is smarter than the guy driving it. The sales person said to me the best thing you can do is just leave it in drive and work the transmission with your right foot throttling in the inputs. He is correct, meaning the manual function, shift paddles etc are really superfluous. It is therefore an automatic, great for sitting in city traffic, but it seems to take a little of the sports car feel away. Jim
I have driven both and really didn't like the M5. Different conversion. The Turbo was surprisingly fast and the grip exceeded all expectations. A highway pull yeilded some very high digit results. I was very happy to get the chance at giving it some sick, and all of my expectations were met, if not exceed. From what I've heard about the new Turbo S, the performance statistics are unreal. Porsche have taken the 911 into some amazing territory with this new car. _J
600 HP.........built a couple of 996TT examples with 600 HP.........they accelerate so hard and everything happens so quickly, that your "unadjusted" brain cannot process the speed at which things are closing on you. Scary to be honest for the first day or so.........give it a few weeks though, and it becomes fun. It is not about car control per say, but real time data processing in the space between the eyes and the brain.
PDK is old technology for Porsche. The Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe name dates from 1983, when the first experimental version was developed and used in a 956 Series-produced endurance race car. A 956 with the experimental gearbox won a German national championship race, and a couple of years later a 962, the 956's descendant, equipped with the gearbox won an international championship race at Monza, in Italy. These cars will see the streets for the most part, I will take manual
My soon to be 600 or so hp daily driver. Fast: yep Competent: yep Fun and engaging: meh Not nearly as fun or charming as my old school 993tt. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Jamie, That car looks amazing. And I like your style with 600 hp. I also completely agree with you about the 993 TT. In my eyes, the best Turbo ever built! The new cars are great, but they all drive the same and there are too many computers. I always like my 911s because my Mercedes had all the computers with the acronyms (abc, srs, abs, etc), and that's not what I want in my sports car. Now the Porsche is just like a BMW or Mercedes with all the extra gadgets and computers that tell the car and the driver what to do. Yes, it's better, but it's not as fun!
My pride and joy: 1 owner, 12k miles. More engaging than almost anything. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ahhhh, black with red (very rare). Is that jet black? Not to mention the Carrera GT isn't too shabby either! I'd say you have amazing taste!
This isn't a S model, but the driver drives like a maniac. Not sure if he was the driver of the 458 but the R8 V10 was just as bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3ydvKpxavY
Just picked up my new 2011 911 Turbo S on Monday night! Can't wait to break it in!!! Will post up pics later!
I just can't imagine what it'd be like to drive a 600hp car. I was in the States in July for my sister's wedding and my dad let me use his (new to him) Porsche 911 (993) Carrera 2 Convertible as a daily driver. It is by far the fastest car I've ever driven... when he was in the car with me I was permitted to use varioram to see what it's like and it's pretty darned savage. If I remember correctly, that has somewhere near about 280hp... I'm sure someone here would know the precise figure. All the best, Andrew.

LOL...it's a shared underground garage...that ramp coming down had me worried but no scratching coming in and out. Unfortunately, as soon as I am driving off of the dealer, I scratch the bottom left and center of the front bumper already! Oh well, it's a replaceable plastic for around $200.
That turbo S IS really fast!! My friend just bought a 2011 turbo and I was chasing him in my R35 GTR, I was very impressed with his speed.... So I can imagine the S being even faster....
I think Porsche switched the production line to Turbo S in the last few months so there are only a handful of regular Turbos in the inventory. They cut down the production number to keep the inventory low to drive up demand.
