Does anyone have a suggestion for, or a photo of, a heat shield below the alternator? My car had part of the shield removed. I have seen a few views and I would like to know how far it would go behind the alternator. As well as how it was attached.

Rob, I really like your impromptu timing marks! I wish I had thought of something so mind-numbingly clever when I was doing belts a month or so ago. -rick

what are you missing i can take some measurements and photos this weekend?

Rick, the marks help me figure out when I am getting close to the marks so i can go around to the flywheel. I am going to be using these soon! The marks on the bolt are to make sure it is not falling off! HA

Now I understand the problem. My headers have been stripped of the aluminum covers and fiberglass fill, the good part of this is they dont get holes anymore the bad part is they are hot! I'm guessing custom bent shields are required. I have concidered thermal wrap but I know what that can do to the tube after a couple of years. Perhaps the Euro pipes are different.

Headers themselves are the same, ours got wrapped to help the thermo muffler oxidize unburned HCs......

You need those two that Robert shows, and our alternators had a flat round plate on the back with standoff straps, for heat I guess...

It's warm under there either way!!

if you have the money I would invest in tubi headers and without smog pumps they would be fine. without the pumps running my engine bay temps are 100 degrees cooler.

Another solution would be jet coating them.

I have been running with Jet coat headers but I was thinking a little protection on the alternator might not be a bad idea after looking at the prices of replacements. I have fabricated a small heat shield to fit in that area, 2 thin 1100 series aluminum .016 sheets with a thermal barrier between. I will see what my laser thermometer says tomorrow with and without. Maybe more fun then necessary. First I have to patch the gas tank on my Beemer.

Raricar, do you have a Euro or US car? Euro didn't have the header covers at all, instead they have shields bolted on to the headers. The other covers over the RH exhaust pipe are also different. US cars had stainless there, Euro is Al.

My car is a US version that had been stripped of the thermal reactors before I got it. Lots of holes in the headers! With that repaired and the headers coated I'm trying to mitigate some of the heat. The heat shield I made looks like number 17 in the above. I wrapped the fuel line, though I dont think that is to much of a problem mostly its the alternator. Thanks for the Euro drawings.

If your only concern is the alternator, I wouldn't worry too much. They are pretty robust and are designed to be exposed to the heat in the engine bay. And rebuilding one is not that expensive. I just had the Bosch alternator from my '86 328 rebuilt by a local shop for $150. Came back looking better than new. If the alternator on your car goes, don't go buy a new one. These are easily rebuilt, and since most of them are Bosch, the parts are readily available.

That said, installing a shield to keep the heat exposure down can't hurt it. But there are probably a 100 other projects you could work on with your car that are more pressing than making a heat shield for the alternator.

    My $.02.

Out of curiosity what year is your car?

I remeber a thread related to plugging the holes in the headers after removing item #12 in the drwaing. Any more details on where to buy the correct plugs etc..?

    Thx

My car is was made in May 1975 but it is titled a 1976 rebadged Ferrari with 5 spoke Campy wheels. As for the plugs I made eight steel 12mm X 1.25mm pitch plugs about 10mm long trimmed off and slotted to fit the bungs on the headers.
