84 QV shuts down in neutral

    Hi guys, it's been a while..My '85 QV, stalls during downshifting while going through neutral, and at times, if it does not stall, it will go into the "hunting" mode till the key is turned off. Restarting is not a problem, but this situation drives me up the wall. Cold starts, no problem, acceleration, no problem, no other problems or what so ever. Any ideas? Also I was told by my Ferrari mechanic that when he did the major on my car, he found out that the ECU is not responding to testing. In other words it's dead. Is this possible?     ECU not responding to testing doesn't mean the ECU is dead, just means your mechanic was stumped.

    Considering what happens during your typical downshift, the throttle switch comes to mind as you lift the throttle when you press the clutch and the throttle microswitch changes in attempt to reduce emissions. It is possible the ECU FI module is bad but I'd be slow to condemn it until the cheap stuff like this microswitch is eliminated as an element in the downshift conspiracy.

    I'd suggest to disable the throttle microswitch and see if the 'shuts down in neutral' problem continues. Not having worked on that switch, I can't know whether to suggest connecting it temporarily open or closed, so pick one and try it. Murphy dictates you will pick the wrong one first but it must be done.

    Guys, I forgot to mention that I have replaced the cat with a straight pipe, with the O2 sensor still in place. You could not stand behind the car for more than 2 minutes without gasping for air, so rich, is this normal? Any adjustments that need to be made when the cat is bypassed? Am I damaging the O2 sensor by removing the cat? Could a "sticky" idle control valve cause the idle to drop the the point where the car stalls? Thanks in advance, Ted.
