By Chua Hian Hou Pay-TV operators, like Starhub and Singtel that ink exclusive content deals must share the shows with their rival's customers. -- PHOTO: STRAITS TIMES PAY-TV operators will have to share exclusive content. On Wednesday, the Government reaffirmed its March ruling requiring pay-TV operators that ink exclusive content deals share the shows with a rival's customers. While the Media sector regulator Media Development Authority (MDA) had already amended its Media Market Conduct Code to effect the change, it promised to hear out the concerns of all parties affected by the ruling before announcing its decision on the changes. Over the last six months, the MDA said it had 'carefully considered the feedback from stakeholders'. The agency has announced that it will stick to its guns, in spite of objections from content companies who attacked the ruling as heavy-handed and even possibly a breach of international treaties. In a media briefing for its 'preliminary decision', the MDA mounted a stout defence of the ruling. The agency said it had no choice but to step in because pay TV providers StarHub and SingTel wielded exclusive content as their sole weapon in their war for customers, resulting in unnecessary cost and inconvenience to consumers. A consumer who wants to watch HBO will need a StarHub account and set-top box. If he also wanted to catch English Premier League (EPL) football, he would have to sign up for a SingTel account, incurring an additional $120 in sign-up fees and needing another set-top box - in addition to EPL programming fees. Over time, as more pay-TV players set up shop here and secure exclusive content of their own, the situation could get even more dire, said the agency's deputy chief executive Michael Yap. The MDA also took aim at charges by influential industry lobby group Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (Casbaa), which called the move a breach of international copyright treaties as well as the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Mr Yap said the MDA had not violated any treaties. It had, he added, also engaged Allen & Gledhill and Lee & Lee to look into the allegation, and both law firms had since confirmed its position. Another suggestion put forth by many of the 19 companies that submitted formal presentations to it was to deploy a set top box capable of receiving signals form both SingTel and StarHub. Mr Yap said this was technologically unworkable - such a box did not exist. And even it did, he said, the MDA would have to make some changes to the law to force unwilling pay-TV providers to share content.
Yes in short, u need just one box either the hubstation or MioTV to watch most channels except video by demand and A Film from Japan!! muhahahah I am super duper glad that they change the manager at least. Loserpool is a pain to watch now but I am still their fan as I believe "You will never walk alone".
At least for once I am glad that IDA and Minister heard the public outcry for both the World Cup and EPL issues. I am also not sure whether I can tahan till 2015 but giving biz to Singtel is something I hate to do and the most funny part, I am their shareholder too.......muhahaha So can brothers here point me to a good pub or lounge to watch EPL during weekend???
ALL F458 are being recalled for campaign #51. Ferrari has determined that cause of the fires are coz of the adhesive used on the heat shields under the rear fenders. The new solution is to use rivets. Speculation that its's apparently a batch of incorrectly mixed epoxy resin, too much of one compound and not enough of the other or something that lowers the flashpoint . Cannot pinpoint all the affected cars so changing all globally. Sending my car in tomorrow.
