Good drivers are fast, despite they can crash sometimes. Very good drivers can go fast without crashing. Alonso was one of those in 2007. Right now, I think he´s not in his best shape. Let´s hope that he´s not lost the edge.
Yup. I seem to recall those of us who questioned that decision were told how smart that decision was. I guess they're being smart again. The DC deficit is 41 points, CC is 80 and there are over 600 points up for grabs, 348 in podiums alone. That's one big-ass white flag they're waving. Domenicali just saying it like it is? +1,000 Use-by-date expired a few years ago. As for the OP: The difference between Ferrari and Mercedes is, that Ferrari is out of the WDC, WCC and therefore shifting focus makes sense. Whereas Mercedes was out of money months ago. Not exactly the same situation.
Whoa!, back up the bus a bit there!. Ferrari are 80 points behind in the WCC so that's a tall order to catch up but not entirely impossible, and Alonso is 41 points behind Hamilton in 1st place and 38 points behind Webber in 2nd place. Now lets say Hamilton and Webber take each other out at Monza this weekend (not beyond the realms!), and Alonso goes on to win the race with button and Vettel struggling down the order (not likely but you never know!). This would mean Alonso would then be 16 points behind Hamilton and 13 points behind Webber which would make the WDC a very real possibility. I still remember a certain Ferrari driver being written off in 2007 by just about everyone and coming through to take the WDC, so lets not loose faith just yet!. There's still up to 150 points available lets not forget!.
Look, I'm probably one of the biggest Alonso fans there is and would love nothing more than see him clinch a title for the Scuderia this year, but I think it is unrealistic at this point. I said it after Hockenheim: He only has a chance if the performance increase in Hockenheim (of the entire team, before some smarty pants starts sniping about the team order again) was no fluke, but apparently it was. 2007 was a special situation: That outcome was staged by McLaren to escape further punishment (leaving Hamilton out on the shod tires in China and giving him an additional and unnecessary pitstop in Interlagos). Being a Kimi fan I was happy about the result, but it wouldn't have happened if not for those special circumstances. Can I prove it? No. Do I believe it? Yes.

I don´t buy this theory mainly for one reason: McLaren tried to win the championship in the backstage with that stuff of the fuel temperature in the Williams. If they had to loose the championship on purpose, they wouldn´t do it making stupid mistakes in the last two races, making themselves look like idiots. But if they had to it that way, they wouldn´t try to fix the result in a desperate backstage manouvre to make them look as sore losers.

Misdirection. To escape further punishments they had to throw that season's WDC. However, deliberately throwing a title could have exacerbated and compounded their punishments... so you have to do it in a way that nobody can easily question later on. The "desperate" backstage manoeuvre wasn't meant to succeed in the conventional sense either. What it did was aid them in starting 2008 with a clean slate. All the best, Andrew.
Exactly. They knew full well that the fuel dispute wouldn't go anywhere. Teams make mistakes occasionally, but nobody makes so many blatant mistakes in a row. Not a top team with the title on the line. Just not gonna happen.
Maybe... However, in lack of evidence, I´ll choose the most simple answer: sometimes sh*t happens. They did not so bad after all, just had a few lapses with bad timing.
