Under the passenger seat of The Baja Boot we found Steve McQueens original Tool Kit. It's a bit tatty and he seems to have written on it in black marker. Should we send it out for restoration and have the magic marker removed or simply gently clean it and hope the judges don't notice how tatty it is?

For judging, may I suggest that you have an exact replica fabricated rendering a patina of new, unused but appropriately aged. Store the old ratty tool kit in a vacuum sealed, unlit underground safe.

    Very, very cool BTW!

In my opinion, you should keep it original, jury will understand :)

In addition to a nice set of tools it also contained a jack, tow strap, a spare CV joint and a map of the Baja. We're going to frame the map but put the rest back in the bag and put the bag back under the seat.

You never know when you'll need a spare CV Joint.

(We won't be needing the map as we're installing a removable GPS as we kinda of need a speedometer when tooling down the Highways and the one we got contains Baja Maps)

Here's another question. If we put back the original dash board, for safety reasons should we put a "Danger of Electrocution" label over the switches or will that result it point deductions?

Hey I'm taking 0846 and J6 to Fairfield Concours Tomorrow and want to have as many Judging Tips as possible.

Peter Kalikow gave me the proper key fob for 0846 so I'm OK so far as that goes.

I promise to post Ferrari photo's from the concourse so this thread doesn't have to get moved.

I saw Peter's car last weekend for the first time and was just blown away.
Sorry I'll miss Fairfield this year. Hope to see lots of pics.

you clearly need to have a forensic handwriting analysis handy for the judges to prove it's McQueen's writing!!

And it looks like you could lay a strip of bacon across those "switches" if you're in a culinary bind . . .

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but that stuff is junk. I would pitch it.
As for the dash in Post #6, you can get good replacements for all that worn-out gear from JC Whitney.

If you're not afraid to come off of a couple of Benjamins, you could really make that Volkswagen into Something.. I would start off with Dubs and racing slicks if you're serious about showing it.

    Wow. 0846 and J6 were in great company with 1961 winner TRI/61 0794 (#10) and 1965 winner 250 LM 5893GT (#21). Looks like a great day!

Jim that is a fantastic photo of the '61 LeMans winner next to 0846, any chance of sending or posting a larger file, I'd love to print a copy of it for framing in my studio.
    Thanks, John

What's the story with the nose of the Baja Boot? I've seen racing pictures with and without it on... though I do prefer the front "naked."

There are two Boots. Steve owned both. The one I bought is Boot 1 the one he drove and the Baja 500 winner. It has the open nose and rear. Boot 2 was driven by James Garner.

Leave a pet in the car for the show, always a popular move. This guy has the right idea:
