My dad will probably be getting a job in Atlanta soon, so I will most likely be tranferring to Georgia Tech. I am a Biology major Pre-Med track and I work pretty hard. The problem is that I've heard a lot of people say Georgia Tech is unreasonably hard. They make it seem like it's almost impossible to get good grades. This worries me because I have to get good grades to get into med school. I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on this a little. I will go for free, so it's not like I'm taking out loans just for a name. When I say elaborate I mean give me some numbers (like amount of studying per day). I typically study 4+ hours a day seven days a week and double that a week in advance for tests. Would this cut it at Georgia Tech?

    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

Where are you going to school now and how do you know that you'd be going to GT for free?

Honestly, there's no way your question can be answered in a way that will help you. No two people study the same way, so one person's experience will not translate into what your own would be like. It does seem like you study quite a bit, though. There was never a week in college that I studied for 28 hours. I'm not even sure there was a semester that I studied that much.

My cousin just graduated GT, loved the school, but it was definately hard, but like 8 Snake said, two people study in different ways. Studying is not a job that pays by the hour, so some people kill themselves studying and fail while others don't bother all that much and ace tests.

Familiarize yourself with the Vortex and the RedBrick Brewing Company. Oh and avoid the Varisty unless you like being ill.

I'm a Biology major, so I don't think very technically. As of now I'm studying on average 4 hours a day, 3 of that being for Calculus and 1 for Biology. I currently attend Armstrong Atlantic State University (small school, but it has a strong math and science program, so all the maths and sciences are traditional weed-outs, which is why I have to study so much). I said I'd be attending for "free", but I meant technically free. I will have HOPE (covers tuition and $150 in books and madatory fees) plus I'll be living in Atlanta, so I won't have to pay for room and board. I'll just be paying for books and parking, which is what I'm paying now. I have no problem studying for science courses because I actually like them. I like math, but it's not an easy subject at our school because of all the engineering majors there. I feel I should also mention I'm making very high A's in all my classes (97 and above), so I don't necessarily have to study four hours a day, but I do it anyway because I want to make SURE I can get into med school. Sorry I wasn't so clear on my original question; I hope this helps.

I had two friends from high school who graduated w/ 4.0 from GT, and let's just say they weren't what you would consider exceptional students back then...both of them are now in med school.

Are you already in school? In Savannah?

The best advice I can give you is to visit the campus and spend time talking with current students. Well, that and to relax a bit. You're going to stress yourself into a breakdown if you're not careful. :)

Thanks for the advice. I guess I should calm down a bit. I don't JUST study though. I'm pretty active; I lift weights and get out as much as I can. :)

I graduated pre med from Armstrong State College w/ a BS in Biology. If you are interested in medicine you should know your college is just a stepping stone. Of course Georgia Tech is “harder”, the classes are larger, not so much one on one. If you are solid in sciences not to worry. BTW, medical schools look at MCAT scores more than GPA. GT may be harder but if you want to be a good doctor you have to work for it. Who would want a doctor that didn't?

You will find GT to be a piece of cake.

The real challenge is med school. They accept the best and most competitive students from a few good colleges. The study load exceeds 10 hours per day. They try to break you down every day. Then:

    One year Internship
    Two years of Residency
    Three years of Fellowship.
..Then you must pass the Boards to become Board Certified in your specialty.

I hope you're right about GT being a peice of cake. I've heard all the horror stories of med school and the non-stop studying. I've heard residency is even worse though. My main goal right now is just to get into med school. Once I get past that obstacle I'll be set, but I know it won't be easy by any means.

I have no clue about how it works in the US, but in the engineering studies I just finished (... with a diploma, equivalent to the US master), I wouldn't have come very far with 4 hours a day...

I won't be going for engineering, but because GT is an engineering school I assume their science/math courses will be pushed a little harder than normal, so yes, I completely agree with you. 4 hours a day wouldn't do too much.

The second year of med school will also be tough. You must carve up cadavers (dead people). This is where many students (~35%) just fall to the floor (their knees buckle, and they find another profession).

After med school, they send you to internship and residency. They will place you at Grady for a holiday weekend. It's a 144 hour marathon. You can sleep in a cot in the "dead room" between ER patients that have six gun-shoot wounds to their torso.

The nursers will be looking for your orders. If you can not stabilize them very quickly, it's your job to go into the waiting room and tell the family that you couldn't save their son from death.

    Then there is ObamaCare.

Uh...not sure what you're talking about.

First year of med school is gross anatomy with cadavers. I'm in 2nd year now and the only dead body stuff we will do is an autopsy (nice and fresh :)). There is not 35% drop out rate. Very very few students leave the program. Over the course of 4 years, I'd say at most 10% are out of their original class for various reasons (medical leave, failed a year, etc).

There isn't 10 hours a day of studying. First year was pretty simple and light workload and I would study probably 4-5 days prior to an exam for about 8 hours a day. The 2 weeks prior to that, I would just chill with my classmates. Second year has more workload and I study about 10-12 hours a day 3 days prior to the exam (we have 3 days off before each exam). Maybe a couple hours a night after each day of class. Weekends are not free anymore like they were in first year.

It's not as hard as people make it out to be. I'm not even in the top half of my class grades-wise as I no longer care about that. I learn to understand the material and not do short term small fact stuff the high-rank people do.

Our 2nd exam of the year was yesterday and I spent 3 hours after that doing research at the cancer center next to campus. Today I was at a local hospital with a heart surgeon and help him with a CABG. :)

Edit: to the OP, go to UGA. SEC football is the best. I went to UF and would not give up that experience for anything. I enjoyed my time in undergrad. Go to a school like UGA...GT doesn't have many good looking girls (according to friends that went there, lol). Enjoy college. Don't spend too much time in books.

Yes, Tech has a fair share of lookers. And yes, they have officially reached 30 percent female enrollment.

I went to Tech and during freshmen orientation (FASET) they will tell you to look at the person to the left and to the right, they will most likely not be there next year.

One TA at Tech gave a sample pop quiz in Calc up at Michigan and the whole class fell.

Prepare to double your study hours if you get by now, if you are gifted, then no worries.

    Good luck

First of all, thanks to everyone for all your comments and support. BMW. Sauberteam: Thanks for the comforting advice. I've looked into UGA as well as GT and just have to decide which is the best fit for me. The main reason I'm leaning toward GT more is because I'll be living in ATL, so I wouldn't have to pay as much as at UGA. UGA does seem a lot more laid back though, which is a plus considering I don't want an ulcer by 25. By the way, good luck in med school; I hope you get your top residency choice. :)

I graduated from Georgia Tech in 08 without much of a problem. I think my GPA around 3.6-3.7 and I ran an exotic car rental company for my last two years there. I was a Public Policy major which was much different but I think that you will be able to manage if you have succeeded at other schools. There are people in every major with 4.0's and many who fail every class. I lived with 5 other guys who went to Tech. 1 got a 4.0 in AE, 4 of us were over 3.0, one got kicked out. The guy with the 4.0 studied about 2 hours a day. The rest of us probably studied an average of 1 hour a day. Good luck to you.
