thing is - 4 into 1 headers appear to a layman like me to have a really basic design- assuming high quality st steel is used , can the difference in prices be justified- does the purported performance really differ so much. doesnt really seem to be high tech rocket science type product

Tim, u guys ordering the headers from fabspeed? I would white ceramic coat it. If you guys notice how most racing cars do it including Pagani as well. Probably keeps the engine bay cooler as well.

The infamous drone offered by them is from the mufflers which happened to me as well. Don't think headers will have that issue.

Regarding backpressure, let me dig out something for you guys to clear it once & for all.

Yes mate, I understand your comment.

But the quality of the bend (mandrel bending to ensure no kinks in the bend for example) and whether there is a polishing of the internal piping at the entrance for example (may) increase gas flow smoothness.

Also, the quality of the steel used (I have had the headers on my Evo crack and need rewelding due to the huge heat that was generated from them and the cold rain water hitting them- if you have seen a car on a dyno at full power you will see that the headers actually turn bright orange due to the huge heat of close to 900 degrees), and the weld joint between the main mounting surface and the tubing can also crack if not welded well. The latest in headers is from Akarprovic (spelling??) where they are using titanium as the material of choice- saves a ton of weight and really has a unique sound quality.

Finally the actual design needs to be perfected for the vehicle- equal length headers are not perfectly easy to do on a car escpecially in modern cars with all the hang on bits- and truth be told, headers are usually added only once everything else in the car has been modified to a very high level already. The fact is that headers just don't make that significant a difference to the performance (and indeed the sound) of a car compared to other mods- and hence to get any real value out of them, you have to pay top dollar for someone who has done a ton of R&D trying all the different designs of headers for a specific model before arriving at that "perfect" design for that specific car. Truth be told, I wouldn't spend on headers again if I didn't damage them. Keep the money for other mods to the car....

But, if you really want a new set of headers, to to me I would pay the extra and know I am getting the max performance out of the mod and know that I am not going to have a header that will need to be brought to Man Exhaust a few months later for repair work. Just mny thoughts... :D

Oh yes, Jon is right, I should have clarified that the drone is from their mufflers- but to me the design of their mufflers is a reflection of their general R&D and as Jon said, I would either ceramic coat or a cheaper alternative is to wrap the headers in heat foil which is available from top quality car workshops...

We shall find the answer when we put both our cars together :D. Or we should have just ask the Proton drivers that we passed on the E22 that day when just you and me were going for it together at 8000+ rpm.
