    I am working on a 1991 F40 (just over 10k miles on the car) that was parked last summer and we went to start it earlier this summer and it would not rev up. We checked some of the basics and found that the drivers exhaust is cold and passenger side is Hot after running for 2 min (seems to have a ok idle but when given throttle is is very lazy and will not rev). We pulled the spark plugs the passenger side is black and alittle fuel soaked the drivers side has a lot of fuel on them. We removed the inlet to the turbos and the impeller spins good on both sides. We removed the vac. line for the fuel psi regulators (one each side) and found there is a green crusty substance in side the vac line (same on both sides) is this somthing that was used at the factory? (we have the spark plugs out and did not check vac before pulling plugs).

    Any help or ideas would be a great help. Thanks!

    I see you just joined. Judging by what you call checking the basics you have absalutly no idea what you are doing with this car. Bail now and save yourself. Basics would include: Fuel pressure on both banks, is this Euro or USA car, compression and four gas readings ahead of the cats. Is there spark on both banks.

    Did you buy that car or are you a mechanic?

    I'm surprised the real owner wouldn't want a qualified mechanic work on that car...

    Does your F40 have two catalytic converter heat monitors (exhaust ECUs) on it from the factory?

    Hold everything and flush the gas!!!

    George Foreman's came out of storage in much the same manner and the fouled fuel ruined the cats and some other components......fuel line deteriation with modern blends is another issue.

    +1 no kidding ouch.

    anyhoo. although I no nothing about F40s, I can say that fouled plugs as commonly ignition related. Check for spark. If you have that. Check leakdown and compression after that.

    Sounds like you lost one bank. check to see if you have ignition for the cold bank. if not, first thing to check is connections, after that, check the pickup for the cam, the wires break on them alot and also the c-clip that holds the cam reluctor tend to fall off.

    if still have a problem, put on a truck and send it up...:)

    I agree. It sounds just like my 308 when I lost one bank. I don't know if the F40 has the digiplex/ignition system but checking for spark is relatively easy.

    As far as being hard on these guys...just 3 years ago I had my first Ferrari and had critical responses to my questions on FCHAT from some but mostly positive reponses. . I am still far from an expert but I have 2 majors (308 and TR) under my belt as well as getting some unobtaineum parts made that have helped fellow Fchatters. You only learn by trying.

    it requires 720 rpm for the reluctors' signals to be processed by BOTH ECUs prior to dropping a ground signal from the ECUS to throw relays for BOTH the fuel pumps, AND injectos...
    Prior posts have touched on the cam triggers(use BRASS feeler guages!)-this is only 1 of the two-and there are TWO PAIRS of these{the other pair of reluctors drives off of the pins on the flywheel to be found on the bellhousing}-without which, the car CANNOT FIRE...
    Do however, change fuel. All filters, flush nozzzles(16 of them), should be blasted as they are 6-1200 EACH...
    Sounds like a typical barn queen 288....use the iridium NGK pluds, good luck...not too complicated, really...

    I had a similar prob on mine. turned out to be a cam position sensor. total bill... under $700 (from a dealer). but the number of faults that can lead to this is huge. don't start chasing zebra's in a dark hallway...

    If you are in over your head, send it on.
