Leak underneath clutch - help

    I happen to notice there is a gasket O Ring on the inside of that plate. Mine was a little loose, and there was a tiny bit of play - I don't know if that is good, bad, or normal.

    To show how much play it had, I sprayed in red in the third pic the gap between the O Ring and the lip of the plate of the area that the O Ring should be hugging. I have no idea what the part # is for this, but if anyone can tell me I will be happy to replace it.

    Now for the most important part of the purpose of this - check the staking of the gears (I hope I termed that properly - if not, Master Stooges please feel free to veto that and announce the right).

    As Ernie explained, "staking" is where you will see the metal punched into the groove.

    Although I just learned this a few hours ago, I believe mine are fine, but I will let an expert comment on it.

    You're doing well my friend. :D:D

    That pressure plate looks fine. :):)

    Remove that oring and have it matched up down at your local auto parts shop, or wherever they sell orings in your part of the world. :D:D

    That nut looks to be staked, but not very well. I would get in there and stake it over some more to make sure Mike. :D:D

    Thats if it hasnt already come loose? :eek::eek:

    Ah, better pics. :D:D

    The left side looks to be ok, but the right side wasnt done very well. :):)

    Get in there and bash them over some more Mike. :D:D

    I dont think its loose because the left side looks to be quite snug. :):)

    ONE VERY IMPORTANT WORD OF ADVICE - when re-installing the plate, it is hard to get it back in so make damn certain you take your time putting it back, make sure it is back in there tight...I spent about 5 or 6 minutes tapping it in, inspecting it, etc. to ensure that it was snug against the back wall, I was so paranoid that I didn't put it back properly that it might start leaking gear oil....in fact, i just scared myself thinking about it that I am gonna go outside again and have another look, and inspect it again for 10 of 15 minutes.

    Thanks PAP. You have no idea how paranoid I am about keeping this car in tip top condition, both mechanically and cosmetically :)

    Good idea, I think I will do that. As Ernie stated, it simply cannot be a Ferrari poprietary gasket - it looks like a standard rubber O Ring to me ;)


    WHAATTTT!!!!!!!!!!!?????!!!!!! :eek: double :eek: and triple :eek: Right after I just mentioned that I am paranoid of keeping this thing tip top condition!!! Be right back, gotta go bust somebody's head open for this....

    Oh sure, NOW you tell me... :)


    How would I do that? What tools would I need? I may end up destroying something as I have no experience with this procedure.

    Get a cold chisel approx the same thickness as the staked sections. :):)

    Then get in there and bash it over. :eek::eek:

    Dont use the sharp end of the cold chisel, because that will just tear the metal. Turn it on its side and then give it a few fairy taps. :D:D

    Ahh, now I see what you mean after looking a little closer...you are right, the one on the right looks kind of loose. I need to thank Ernie for giving me the idea of checking this.

    Here is what I was talking about before mate. :D:D

    Sorry I dont have a staked nut available to show you. :D:D

    Dont hit with the sharp end of the cold chisel. It will just tear the metal and do nothing. :):)

    Turn it on its side and hit. Its also wider and will fill that staked area REAL nice. ;);)

    Had no idea there was another staked ring nut in there... :eek::eek: when I did my gearbox, I only verified the ring nuts behind the side covers... will definitely have a look this winter.

    As Pap said you need to give that right side a good smack to stack it better. But before you do. Did the ring have any play in it, as if it were loose at all?

    Ernie, I don't know, I didn't touch it...I don't know how to check it, I don't know what I am looking for...you mentioned a ring? Can you please re-post one of my pics and highlight or point to it? I am gonna take it apart again anyways because I am going to replace that sealing ring inside the inspection plate.

    Thanks a MILLION for the tip on checking this, I would NEVER have thought to do this on my own. This way I get to settle two issues - whacking that right side to make it tigher, and also replacing that sealing ring.

    The nut that needs to be staked, you know the cover that you are gonna take off and replaced the o-ring on, the ring nut that is behind it? Get ahold of it and try twisting it from side to side. As if you were gonna try and unscrew it. If it moves at all, you will need to retorque it. If it doesn't move then stake the right side of it like Pap said, put in the new o-ring, and put the cover back in place.

    Thanks Dan. I have to thank Ernie for coming with the idea of taking that plate off to inpsect that ring nut. Everything is off, so let's check every nook and cranny :)

    Quick update and question:

    I am waiting for the parts to arrive, should be here Friday, then I can complete this job.

    Does anyone know how to get this seal out (the orange one, called the Ring/Scraper). It is a very hard rubber/plastic, has absolutely zero flexibility. Getting it out is one thing, but then how would the new one go back in? Do I force it in, and will it simply snap into place? It doesn't look that simple to me.

    For the record, I would think this has to be able to be replaced, as it would seem silly to have to replace a perfectly working TO Bearing if this seal ever needed replacing.

    It is part # 138387, # 34 in the table.

    Ok, today I removed the Bush Support Flange to have a look at the seals behind it.

    Four 13mm nuts will get it off, as illustrated in picture one.

    Picture 2 is the back of the flange, looking at one of the seals. It looks to be in perfect condition, but since I took I made it this far I am going to replace it with a brand new one (about $35 for that part)

    Now I went to look at the tiny little O Rings (two of them) and almost had a heart attack.

    Notice what is missing in the first picture?

    Not to fear, young lads - in the second picture I found it stuck on the back of the Bush Support Flange....at that point I was able to breathe easy :)

    The condition of these two little SOB's looked fine, but for less than the cost of a coffee I am going to put a pair of brand new ones (84 cents each)

    A pic of the front and backs of each below....I am not sure what that white paint looking substance is.

    And now I sit and wait for my parts to arrive from Ricambi...tick tock, tick tock...
