Pops, are you keeping track of who subscribed, so far who did you get to subscribe?

 

I've been here for longer than that....and I am NOT subscribing. I was here when newer postes went to the TOP of the Blue/white forum colorscape, before the ads, before there even WAS a subscription fee. My actual 'join-date' is much-older than what it really is. We had dealership reps on this board, Factory-trained mechanics, real 'experts' in the service-end of the industry. All have been run-off, 'banned', or just fed-up with the endless stream of loudmouth Newbies and shade-tree mechanics who still think the 'best-way' to change timing belts is with duct-tape and chicken-wire because it somehow worked once in their garage ten years ago.....whatever.

I'm missing Politics and Religion? No I'm not - I was here when it was free and open to all. Talk about throwing a bomb into a crowded room, I get plenty of that nonsense from the nearest news forums - everyone screaming, nobody listening, everyone's opinion is 'superior'.....whatever. It wasn't the highlight of FChat then, it isn't now.

I've been around long enough to know what Rob Lay's financial outlays are - he has more money coming in than he has expenditures. He knows that, I know that, move on. Dozens, and dozens of sponsors I can't keep track-of anymore. Hundreds, if not thousands, of subscribers already. You have to be a member to even post ads. Anyone see the Financial balance-sheet for this website? Unless Rob is going broke (hahahaha), he doesn't need a membership drive, he needs better members who actually have factory-trained technical knowledge to share (or at-least some people who know how to read the WorkShop Manuals to their own cars instead of talking out their azzz).

I've gotten more BAD information from this forum than I have GOOD information. This is something I need to pay for? My mechanic chimes-in here on occasion, but we have a good laugh now and then from all of the TERRIBLE technical information posted on this board by people who should know better, but don't....I'm surprised most 'members' still have cars that run and drive. It wasn't always like this.....many of my real-world friends used to check-in regularly, and they, too have moved-on. About the only useful part of this forum left is the 'search' feature - I can still piece-together a few shards of accurate information from the mountains of B.S. and discover a useful picture or procedure somewhere. Most users don't bother to actually SEARCH for information, they just post-up another thread of the same darned topic that was already covered 2-3 years ago.....whatever.

NO, I'm not subscribing. I used to come here religiously, and now I'm here rarely. I can go weeks without visiting once, return, and find-out that I really haven't missed much. The same good people gone. Another new set of clueless people who don't really know what they're talking about, but really want to be 'heard'.....whatever.

 

You forgot to mention how great it is to be able to post a dissenting opinion... freedom of speech and all that...

Well, even he said he comes here, just not very often, to (apparently) find information he can piece together from shards of information and make it useful. Apparently wherever he resides now doesn't offer all the info he needs.. isn't FC great?

The problem he says he has with this site is true of ANY website, the only ones I have seen that are like he describes from back in the old days are extreme specialist sites that you subscribe to, and are direct on a point or subject or you are run off.
Yes, we know what a host costs, we know what bandwidth costs, we know how much the owner is pulling in, but just like anything else, it's a business, it's a niche, and he has a right to make money at it. Any of us could do the same thing - I know I could, but we don't.
