    Can't say I'm a fan of this. I liked AirTran being a competitor to SWA with newer planes and wifi on all plane. SWA claims it's to expand services, but they already have a lot into BWI and recently expanded into DC anyway.

    I wish they wouldn't get together like this. I used to only fly SWA, but was disappointed on my recent flights and switched to AirTran (Orlando based...where I'm from). Shucks. :(

    You'd think competition is a good thing...it's not like they were hurting for money as much other airlines that merged.

    It will be interesting to see what effect this has on ATL. In particular, I'll be interested in Delta's reaction.

    I predict Boeing will be very happy. Airtran's lessors? Not so happy.

    I love both airlines. Sounds like a match made in heaven ;)

    But yeah how the heck does that work with the airplanes? Doesn't Southwest only run 737's?

    Even the most successful mergers, regardless of industry, are profoundly difficult. My wife and I fly >120 segments a year on Southwest......please don't screw this up!

    Yes, they only have 737s. AirTran has 717s and 737s. I think AirTran has the youngest 737 fleet in the US. SWA is getting up their in age I think...

    Southwest currently operates 544 Boeing 737 jets (as of June 30, 2010).

    Type
    737-300 - 173 planes
    737-500 - 25 planes
    737-700 - 346 planes

    - The Company’s fleet has an average age of approximately 11 years.

    - The average aircraft trip length is 633 miles with an average duration of one hour and 52 minutes.

    -Southwest aircraft fly an average of 6.25 flights per day, or almost 10 hours and 47 minutes per day.

    -Southwest was the launch customer for the Boeing 737-700 in 1997. Southwest was also a launch customer for the Boeing 737-500 and -300 series aircraft.

    As an employee of SWA....I REALLY "hope" this goes well. I still have 17 more years until retirement, so I have a vested interest to make this work. That being said, "hope" is no way to go thru life.
