What air cooled car will $20k get you?

I would think you would be able to get an 87-88 Carrera coupe or cab for around 20. My 87 cab was totaled in an accident (not my fault) and I received 18300 as settlement, then sold car for parts for 4K. This was 6 or 7 years ago.

My 01 996 as shown with 56K miles only brought 26 one year ago. Very sad how it dropped so quickly in value.

unfortunetly the stigma associated with 996/boxters and engine failures scares potential buyers regardless of how few, I do love the interior and modern looks.

That's funny, because while I like how the 996 drives, and I like that it's comfortable, I've always hated the interior quality and design, and the lost exterior shapeliness from the 911 era. It always looked nice until someone in a 911, 964 or 993 pulled up. Then it looked wrong.

The 3.2 Carrera series feels like the bargain right now. I could really see buying a decent one, upgrading the audio/head unit, and using it every day. Probably a sunroof coupe. They look even better now that everything else on the road is a monochromatic blob.

 

That Carrera Coupe looks great - unfortunately, it's not quite what Uro is looking for as it's not air-cooled.

Hope I can find a deal like that at some point when I'm looking for a daily driver.

I guess its the Navi and white gauges that feels modern, switchs. The aircooled took 300 man hours to build while watercooled 150. This is important for me for quality assurance as machines have tunnel vision ;p

Aircooled era remind me of tanks, gauges, fit finish interior exterior, not fragil very Herculian.

 

I just sold my '95 993 coupe for $20k. It had 78k miles and was my daily driver for the past 1.5 years and 14,000 miles. All I had to do was an oild change and some minor little things like a window switch. Car was still riding on the original clutch. Replaced it with a '96 993tt that I picked up for a great deal. It will be a partial daily driver and hopefully as reliable as the NA car. The tt is a monster

 

Hi Uro, I bought a 1986 Carrera Targa, 2 owner car, 41k miles, records, full books, original paint for low 20s. Went crazy and pulled the motor to reseal (dripped on my garage and I have a slight perfectionism problem).

At the time, fully detailed the motor, valves set, plugs done, turbo valve covers, new cam lines, etc etc. Replaced 4 speakers in factory locations, has original Blaupunkt Monterey.

Doesn't drip now! Runs great. Oh, plus new tires, full detail, new rear calipers, refinished Fuchs, I can't remember what else.

It's Stone Grey metallic, mid gray leather, power seats both sides, raised hub steering. Has books, records, tool kit, spare, working key fob light (see perfectionism comment) and original window sticker. Negative to you is it has a factory 3.3 turbo tail. Easily removed.

Planning to sell for $24k. A quite nice car, I have more in it. And get this - the AIR BLOWS COLD!

I'm moving to a 993 C2S. Gonna 'backdate' one. Anyway, if you want this one, let me know.

I mean, who WOULDN'T?!?! Thanks Pete. I drove it to work this morning, what a neat car. Crisp air, targa top off, air cooled whine in the ears. Pretty fine. These really are excellent cars. I totally see why they're so popular.

I like the 996 as a daily driver. In fact, I used one for a year or so. I sold it and re-bought it after almost two years from the owner who bought it from me previously. In between, I had a Cayenne and then an 86 Carrera. The 86 lasted three months as a daily driver, then I longed for something for practical and comfortable. The novelty wore off quickly. If I didn't have other cars to get my more raw and visceral drive fix, maybe I would have kept it longer.

Styling-wise, I will always have a soft spot for the 80s 911s for nostalgic reasons, but I think I'm over the impact bumper look. I would rather go for the early 911 styling and drive feel.
