Took the distributor apart today and its destroyed inside. The pivot posts for the weights are trashed, because of that, the weights swing out on an angle wearing a big groove in the two slotted tabs that control the shaft's advance (almost wore right through) and the weights themselves are damaged. Anyone have a distributor for a 71 246 or some internal parts? The housing is fine but thats about it!

    Thanks.

    Newman,
I just went through this on my 246. This was the 2nd time the brand new weights came apart in about 8000 miles. what I did was install an MSD programable ignition. I had already gotten rid of the points and put in a trigger wheel and pickup. Now no more weights the advance is set with a laptop. The car has never run better. PM me if you would like any more info would be happy to help.

superformance does have all the internals and you will get your car back on the road with their stuff BUT their stuff is NOT plug-and-play, their weights will need cleaning up, the springs are much too strong and you will need someone with a distributor machine to set up the distributor. I was quite disappointed with the superformance quality but since I have a distributor machine, I was able to get everything working with their parts.

Good idea, that would be a similar approach as with the BSMpdi setup. If you weld the upper T holding the rotor (which you can also get from Superformance) to the axle and remove the weights, you have a locked out distributor and can do the timing via the MSD 6530:
    http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/6530_-_MSD_Digital_Programmable_6AL-2.aspx

With such a setup you can also easily run a more optimized advance curve without spending time at the distributor machine to get the curves right.

Thanks for the great info Peter , ill get the distributor first and consider your update. Now I just need to sort out the Magnesium valve cover treatment to get them looking right!
