Original 14" Campy's. Prior owner must have used some nasty stuff to inappropriately clean then, and ruined the sealant finish. Paint is ok, but the "lacquer" type sealant is all but removed in splotches.

Don't want to restore/refinish these, since they're 14's, but what to do to make them look a bit nicer before moving up to 16's?

Is there a safe way to remove the top sealant, and just leave the paint? Wet sand? From a distance they look fine, but up close -- its bugging me.

This looks like a clear polyurethane, showing normal weathering, not due to any type of harsh cleaning, however I have seen on these 308 wheels sometimes the aluminum actually corrodes and bubbles thru the paint, and the paint just falls off in globs, if that's the case, you must strip, sand and repaint to get a decent finish,

For a temporary fix, you can wet sand w/220, polish w/400 and recoat with clear polyurethane finish, rattle-can clear Rustoleum polyurethane is a good product, you would have to be very careful tho to not sand through the silver paint under the clear coat, there is no short cut to fixing.

    Hi John,

I think you should just do it - - what's it? - - go for the 16s ! - forget putting $ into those 14s unless we're talking "period correct wheels, tires, etc for the purpose of judging". If judging is not a priority, simply go for the look that you like, whatever the diameter.

    Have fun, Hank

Just looking for a low cost, reasonable effort temp solution to tidy them up until 16's.

I think I can take a slow and easy wet sand to them, and then spray poly -- unless someone else has any ideas. No bubbling in the paint, its actually all in the clearcoat.

    Thanks guys.

IMHAEO: Just avoid cutting into the greenish DOW 17 coating. You'll open up a can of worms that's really REALLY hard to close!

Whatever type of clear you're thinking of putting on there, try some on the back of the rim first to see if it doesn't react with the finish that is on there already. You may end up with wrinkle-paint silver wheels! (don't ask...)

Re-finishing rims is not that expensive, and for a decent result I'd advise you to take the tyres off, have them media-blasted clean and start from scratch. You get a much better result, and avoid the risk of having to do the job twice.

Those wheels are made out of magnesium (AZ91D). The green dow coating is on there for a reason - if you've worked with magnesium then you know why. Best NOT to take these wheels down to bare metal. If you want to refinish them, do it with hand sanding, epoxy primer and then finish/clear - that'll last for a good while if you do the job right. Good luck!

+1 on the Magnesium !! Sand down carefully but you will likely affect the paint finish. Just apply light coat of paint and clear on top.

On a related issue. The center hub on most older wheels gets pretty beat up with chips around the inserts any thoughts on repair in this area? I have used epoxy putty and it seems to work pretty well, I find that the anodic coating is chipped away here so I sand or file it clean first, then apply the putty and shape to the original profile, prime and paint. The wheels I have done have lasted about 7-8 years so far.

There IS no clear coat on 14" rims, from the factory......there's a Tech Bulletin on the painting of them...

That looks to me like a light respray giving up......

Griots has a "Wheel Kit" that if you don't use the final clear coat looks very close to OEM.

The trouble with Campys is you'll lose the silk screened lettering.

I'd have a Graphics Shop make those in cut vinyl, before you sand them off.

I had one wheel that the Ferrari was almost gone and I made a water slide decal on my inkjet. Works pretty good used a true type font called Ferro Rosso. Just have to clear coat it. Eurostile font works for Campagnolo,
