The first Ferrari I saw "in the metal" was a '56 250 GT Boano. That was in 1965, I was 15 years old, and didn't write down the s/n, much less bring a camera.
Name of coachbuilder. The top was made higher in the middle of Ellena production, so 6 ft. tall Americans would fit inside too. Best wishes, Kare
OK, I have had three go through my grubby hands: 0429GT, the PF prototype (green when I bought it, and red after I had it painted); 0535GT (white with black top; I painted it gold); and 0605GT (dark red, as I recall). Sorry about the quality of these old snapshots. Great pics! I like them...the quality is appropriate for the era. I wish I'd had sense enough to grab one of those models when they were rebody-cheap.
I love all those old photo's you have, just seeing the houses in the background, the cars brings back many memories growing up in California. Thanks My Grandmother lived in Santa Monica and there was a Ferrari repair shop a few doors down, I used to see lots of Fcars going by just sitting on her front porch.
Here are a bunch of Boano pics. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/default.aspx?i=10&modelID=301&carID=11149#menu And here are Ellena pics. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/default.aspx?i=10&modelID=309&carID=8768#menu
Velocetwo: Your comment made me look more closely at my posts. The green car is at the home of a friend, Don Betts; in the background is the prototype Siata 208S (only one door). The B/W pix of 0605 (my first Boano) were taken at my second house, a small tract of homes built in a former avocado grove; trees everywhere. I had just been admitted to practice in Cal., and was in the L.A. City Attorney's office, where I would deliver a bag of avocados almost every day. Pix of the black and white car were taken in Rome, the balance at my third house up under the "Hollywood" sign. Interesting to note the differences in the engine compartment layouts of 0429 and 0535. Those were great days; we drove 'em all the time, as evidenced by my need to have "nerf bars" built for 0429 so some little old lady in a Cadillac wouldn't destroy the grill.
Those "Nerf bars" are awesome. I was about to comment about them when I saw your new post. Thanks for the historical photo's, stuff like this is unobtainable in any book I have seen.
These cars are apparentley ALL different in MANY respects. The photo's from Ed are probabley a GREAT start to consider teh differences.... the RED Boano has a Ferrari Chassis badge in teh cenetr section of the fire wall... the "newly" gold Boano seems to have the badge on the right side (passenger side/left side looking at the car from the front street view).... most cars I have seen seem to have this plate on the drivers/left side mounted to a chassis plate.....
As long as we are discussing these cars, does anybody know what happened to the Ellana that was at Fantacy Junction then traded to Cosmopolitan Motors in Seattle about 8 to 10 years ago? I looked at the car and seriously pondered buying it. It was very original and rough, so at 47K I passed, and bought a PF Coupe instead for way less money. I wish I had another shot at it!!!!!!!
Here is my contribution to this thread: a few pictures of 0541GT (a Boano) taken this year at Sport et Collection event in France. The car was nice, but when I first saw it it was next to a 250GTO and a SWB California, so I kind of forgot to take more pictures... I can't imagine they should be any different than the drum brake cars to drive as they weigh about the same and have effectively the same mechanicals.
Supported by lots of data from Scott Kelly (many thanks Scott) I decided to go ahead populate a Registry for these wonderful cars (similar in layout to my 250 PF Coupe Registry). I have tried to assign copyright to photos when and where I could. Shout if anyone has any issues and I will remove offending shots. Anyways it's here : http://web.me.com/djaffrey/Boano/Home.html To date 35 cars lightly documented. Lots not. Regards Darren
Wow that was fast (and well done)! You even put my pictures on your site, I'm glad I could help! (BTW my user name is Furanku, not Faranku)
