there really isn't much to working on these cars

    this is my first exotic car

    I have a 99 360 that I bought a month back.

    being naturally mechanically inclined I've worked on Toyotas/Fords/Jeeps that I've owned and maintained.
    at first I was intimidated with this car just by the name and price.

    but after changing my oil and being under the car for the first time this weekend, there isn't much difference with these cars than any other car I've worked on. It still just a bucket of bolts to put it bluntly.

    I guess my point to this thread is don't feel intimidated on doing things yourself on these cars. There isn't much difference than your average commuter car.

    I feel the same way.... better to do it yourself and have the satisfaction that you did it yourself. The web is a wonderful place to get all sorts of information and help!!!!

    Also, know when something is beyond your capabilities and have a good independent shop step in.

    Couldn't agree more. I've found my 360 easier to work on than anything I've owned since my first car, an Opel Kadet! Everything very accessible and laid out before you - a pleasure to work on.

    if you make a boo-boo...

    the fix has several additional zeros on the price tag.

    I'd love to work on mine (when I finally pick one!) but the downside being it might be harder to sell on if cambelt change etc is a DIY job. I had an indepth chat with a very helpful service guy at Ferrari Cardiff today who summarised UK service costs (in separate thread)

    yes, I agree, it will be very costly when a simple oil change goes bad.

    if you're going to tear into a project, even as simple as a oil change, just take your time and be patient. Don't rush around trying to do it. Double and triple check your work and actually enjoy it.

    I actually enjoy doing all the maintenance on my fleet, even the simple oil changes. If you don't enjoy doing it and don't see it as a worth while project, then you will frustrate yourself and mess up.


    and about resale, I understand records and having to explain that to the next owner. but with this car, I'm hoping that will not come for a very long time if ever.

    and also, as far for a modern car, the 360 being OBDII compliant and not having as many fancy electronics to go wrong like 430 or for sure the 458.

    I can't imagine doing any DIY repairs to a 458 or trying to diagnose it.
